مستخلص: This article presents a study designed to measure the penetration of CD-ROM in the library arena, along with the utilization of information technology in American libraries. The background of CD-ROM application in libraries is summarized. The study concludes that CD-ROM is now firmly entrenched in libraries and information centers, CD-ROM searching is the most frequently used service in many libraries, and library patrons are now familiar with and expect to find CD-ROMs in the libraries. The article also discusses the challenges to libraries this success with CD-ROMs creates. One such challenge is the need to create software to monitor utilization because stand-alone CD-ROM workstations typically have no built-in method for obtaining utilization statistics.
