Alternate Title: Confronting foreign cultural invasion through a card game: the case of Alakazum! (English)

    المؤلفون: García-Pedreira, Rocío

المصدر: Boletín Galego de Literatura; 2023, Issue 61, p1-10, 10p

Abstract (English): The card game Alakazum!, by Zombi Paella publishing house, offers a multimodal narrative starring different characters from Andalusian, Catalan, Galician, Valencian and Basque folklore, who must accumulate power to defeat one of the final enemies, from North American culture. In order to study how the proposal is articulated, as well as to check whether the language of certain modern board games can be used in a similar way to other artistic media in the creation of cultural artefacts of an aesthetic nature, this paper carries out a paratextual and discursive analysis of Alakazum!. The results show a great originality in the elaboration of the narrative, whose construction shares certain characteristics of other languages, but treated in a new way, resulting in its own code with semantic and constitutive independence. Moreover, the potential of these proposals for the development of plural reading intertexts is evident, with references coming from systems beyond the literary one, which become essential for the formation of a competent reader of the 21st century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: The Forks in Winnipeg, Manitoba is the central site of this study which un/covers the potentialities of combining critical place inquiries and a/r/tography to mobilize Calls for Justice and education around displacement and disappearance of Indigenous Women and Girls. This study reflects part of my doctoral research which connects living, action-oriented inquiries utilizing earth-based art/works as public provocations. In this contribution, I share how my artistic process of encircling the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) monument with an intricate soil spiral and my encounters with women’s stories and educational resources from the National Inquiry have uncovered complexities of the ongoing disappearance and erasure of women. The discourses embedded in place reveal strong connections to settler colonial forces and have drawn attention to the role of the arts in supporting commemoration and reclaiming discourses of power and place. This action-oriented approach aims to find ways to bring important topics around MMIWG into curricular discussions. This study inspired action steps for advancing the Calls for Justice, including the design of walking professional learning experiences for teachers. The study shows how the place at the Forks functions as a framework inspired by the layered histories and geographies of this significant location. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: The main problems of the traditional foundry dewaxing processes in fine arts workshops are the emission of gases, the loss of 80% of the wax, the high electrical consumption, and the high risks for the operators. The introduction of the microwave technology for dewaxing of ceramic shell molds allows to minimize some of these problems, although the use of electromagnetic susceptors that capture the radiated energy and transform it into heat is required. This article describes different microwave dewaxing tests using TiO2 and graphite as susceptors. The results obtained show that this technique is viable, allowing the casting process to be carried out with a low percentage of breakage problems in the mold and significantly reducing the emitted gases and electricity consumption. The technique allows to recover in the same operation around 90% of the wax used in small and medium format objects. The tests show that the selection of the material used as a susceptor, the area of application and the power regimes, are fundamental to enable a controlled, soft and non-aggressive dewaxing, both for the art molds and for the environment, as opposed to the traditional Flash Dewaxing technique. In this way, it is possible to change the foundry of ceramic shells for artworks to achieve high levels of performance and safety, and to save energy, time and materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: This research investigates the significance of creative freedom and self-expression through the visual analysis of artworks produced in a workshop under the theme 'Visual Literacy'. This multi-layered qualitative study presents the findings from a participatory arts-based research approach that elicits students' creative expression through their personal mandalas. Artworks collected from this creative process were assessed using the interpretive phenomenological analysis method whereas the Common European Framework of Reference for Visual Literacy (CEFR-VL) was used as an assessment tool. Supporting youth through arts-based interventions and motivating them to communicate their feelings and perceptions can be an integral part of students' creative development. Hence, as the focus of the study, this paper aims to illustrate the youths' perception, interpretation, and meaning-making through the artistic creative processes to stimulate their creative and critical thinking. مستخلص: This paper explores ways of integrating values-enacted learning into courses designed on project-based learning (PBL) principles. Building on the ways in which PBL courses provide opportunities for students to reflect on the skills they develop while working on their projects, this paper examines ways to include discussions of the values that inform those skills, and how those values are enacted as students perform various learning behaviors and tasks. "Documenting Performance," a senior seminar taught in Spring 2020, served as a case study for this investigation. The course partnered with two theater companies, and students devised projects to document various artistic and administrative processes involved with two productions that were to be staged that semester. When the pandemic shut down both the university and theaters mid semester, students had to quickly reorient their projects. The paper describes how the original course design used PBL principles to help students discover and design their projects. It then goes on to demonstrate how observing students as they revised their projects led to further insights into the connection between values and PBL projects. It concludes with drawing some suggestions derived from observations made both before and after the shutdown, aimed at linking discussions of values to specific course activities so students can enact and reflect on the role these values play in the success of their projects.
