    مستخلص: This research investigates residents' pro-environmental behavior from the unique perspective of government-resident interactions. Guided by social movement theory, how local governments regulate residents' waste-sorting behavior in Chinese rural tourism destinations is assessed. This longitudinal study (lasting from 2016 to 2022) uses participant observation, in-depth interviews (N = 25), and secondary data as the key research techniques. The dual roles of local governments (i.e., resource mobilization and power redistribution) jointly shape residents' pro-environmental behavior in the waste-sorting campaign. Resource mobilization enhances knowledge of waste-sorting and raises individuals' environmental consciousness. Power redistribution within groups activates social networks in rural communities and changes groups' social capital to influence residents' collective behavior. Results are discussed in relation to how the organizational-level resource mobilization and power redistribution influence the individual-level environmental psychological and sociological factors in shaping residents' waste-sorting behavior. Practical recommendations are offered for sustainable tourism management from a social interaction perspective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

    مستخلص: While pride is identified as a multilayered and complex emotion, tourism studies primarily focus on the pride generated by the presence of tourists acknowledging the residents' culture and do not address all the categories of pride. This research gap is important to investigate because research indicates that pride is associated with residents' perceived well-being, empowerment, and sense of belonging. We examine this contingency through the lens of Hume's Theory of Pride to investigate how destination stakeholders express multiple categories of pride (e.g., vicarious pride and self-pride) and the manifestations of pride (e.g., prestige and caring) in a rural tourism context. We apply a multi-method approach that combines focus group discussions and personal interviews with 51 stakeholders (i.e., public officials, residents, and tourism business owners) from four rural tourism destinations. These destination stakeholders reveal more thorough and powerful meanings of pride that expand Hume's theory and provide insights to practitioners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

    مستخلص: The reproduction of social relationships in a rural tourism destination is examined through a micro-sociological lens that explores residents' everyday interactions. Interaction ritual theory is adopted as the theoretical foundation. Zhinan, a mountainous village in Hangzhou, China, which initiated tourism in 2014, is the study site. Two rounds of focus groups and interviews were conducted with village residents. Qualitative inquiry shows that, under the influence of tourism, residents' daily interactions consist of three interaction rituals, that is, rural living rituals, tourism operation rituals, and event and festival rituals. Due to the distinct ingredients, these rituals unfold differentially and engage different social actors. They complement each other in the co-construction of rural social relationships that have symbolic, emotional, collective, and normative connotations. This study provides in-depth, contextualized understandings of rural residents' interactions and relationships, and draws practical implications for sustainable development of rural tourism destinations.     مستخلص: Small tourism firms (STFs) established and operated by local families can be an engine of sustainable rural tourism. This paper stresses the intimate intertwining of family and business in rural STFs and conceptualizes their entrepreneurial success as a combination of business performance and family well-being. Integrating the resource-based view and network embeddedness theory, relationships among the STF owners' dual social networks (family and industry networks), entrepreneurial resource acquisition, and entrepreneurial success are proposed and tested with a sample of 276 STFs in rural China. The empirical analyses reveal that (1) compared with tangible and knowledge-based resources, the owners' acquisition of psychic resources has the strongest effect on entrepreneurial success; and (2) although industry networks provide more diverse access to entrepreneurial resources, family networks are superior in facilitating psychic resource acquisition, thus are especially important to the entrepreneurial success of rural STFs.     مستخلص: Delivering memorable experiences is the essence of the tourism industry and has been regarded as a core aspect of competitiveness for destinations under the experiential marketing paradigm. However, knowledge remains scarce regarding how memorability can be generated and how it shapes tourist behavior. Taking rural tourism as the research context, this study proposes a theoretical model in which memorability is generated through ordinary experiences (perceived quality and satisfaction) and extraordinary experiences (perceived novelty and delight), which go on to influence word of mouth. This model was tested using two data sets gathered from Chinese tourists visiting rural destinations in China (n = 873) and in New Zealand (n = 500), respectively.     مستخلص: This article focuses on the role of built capital as a catalyst for the development of other forms of capital in collective community-based tourism projects. As part of a regional initiative, modest built capital projects were implemented in six small towns in the Appalachian region of North Carolina. To discover how each community was affected, the impacts of these physical changes were documented, evaluated and categorized using Flora's Community Capitals Framework. Over 100 interviews of stakeholders revealed how each project created new social and human capital, improving the community's psyche, fostering confidence, camaraderie, gratification, and a sense of purpose both within and beyond the tourism-based focus. Additional capitals were cultivated, including spin-off projects, increased visitation by tourists, elected official support, and a more entrepreneurial community. Informants overwhelmingly reported that the physical changes acted as a symbol of the cohesiveness created from the community-centered and participatory approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
