مستخلص: The 2014 Ebola fever outbreak was the first of its kind in West Africa. This epidemic, affecting multiple countries, by far exceeded any previous outbreak in case counts and geographical spread. But Ebola viruses are not new to Africa, as they have occurred in epidemic proportion in the central part of the continent since 1976. The objective of this article is to compare previous outbreaks with the ongoing epidemic in an effort to identify some of the factors which have con-tributed to the size and scope of the existing outbreak.

مستخلص: We report two cases of HIV infection among female travellers of older age. A Danish woman in her eighties was diagnosed with acute HIV infection after travelling to West Africa. A sexual history was not recorded before her third hospital visit. A West African woman in her seventies who had been living in Denmark for 40 years was diagnosed with advanced HIV after having been to West Africa for family visits. We want to emphasize that women of older age also have sex that may put them at risk of HIV, that febrile returning travellers should be tested for HIV, and that presence of HIV indicator diseases should lead to HIV testing.

مستخلص: The global shortage of health workers in a world with interdependence and vast inequalities in health calls for internationally coordinated context-sensitive actions to build a global health workforce of sufficient quantity and quality. This status article describes the global crisis in the health workforce and some solutions and stakeholders in play.

مستخلص: We present two cases of rickettsial infections in travellers caused by Rickettsia typhi and R. africae respectively. The two cases illustrate the widely varying symptomatology and aetiology. Incidence and treatment of the disease are discussed. The diagnosis is complex, and we believe that rickettsiosis is an underestimated cause of fever in returned travellers from the tropics. In the past two years only 26 cases have been diagnosed in Denmark. Whenever rickettsiosis is clinically suspected, empiric treatment with doxycycline should be initiated.

مستخلص: The incident of spotted fever imported to Denmark is unknown. We present a classic case of African Tick Bite Fever (ATBF) to highlight a disease, which frequently infects wildlife enthusiasts and hunters on vacation in South Africa. ATBF has a good prognosis and is easily treated with doxycycline. The treatment should be given upon the clinical picture alone, since antibodies only reveal half of infected cases.

مستخلص: This paper describes the hectic work as a doctor at the Trauma Unit of Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, a highly regarded and well-visited trauma unit worldwide. A trauma junior doctor is followed on a 24-hour-call through a full casualty to urgent operations and complicated postoperative management of the trauma patient. In a diary fashion the paper describes the evidence-based guidelines of management of certain trauma cases brought into the trauma unit during the 24-hour-shift.
