مستخلص: Information Professionals are avid users of data points to inform their practices, but have we flattened the data to such an extent that we have lost the emotional side of research that students experience? In this article, we will discuss our findings regarding student emotions and information beliefs and share ways in which this data can give depth to our practices. In this qualitative study, we used twenty interviews conducted in 2019 to uncover student information beliefs. Through exploratory data analysis we discovered students expressing a variety of emotions beyond anxiety, not all of which were negative. It is only when we examine student perceptions that we reveal the emotionally fraught process of research. Recommendations based on our findings fall into three categories: encouraging information professionals to find paths to removing access barriers, find ways to move into faculty development, and acknowledging the aspects of research that can make it hard but rewarding for students. Our findings and recommendations focus on how to establish practices that allow students to use their persistence in ways that enhance their learning rather than using cognitive energy on the intricacies of a library specific task.

مستخلص: The National Center on Accessible Educational Materials for Learning (National AEM Center) at CAST is a technical assistance (TA) center funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP). The purpose of the Center is to improve educational and employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities through TA activities that increase both the availability and the use of accessible materials and technologies. The Center's stakeholders serve and advocate for individuals with disabilities and their families across the continuum of educational settings: early learning, K-12, and postsecondary academic and career training programs. The AEM Center's TA is guided by the Quality Indicators for the Provision of AEM and Accessible Technologies. The seven Quality Indicators describe the essential elements of a system that ensures the consistent, reliable, and timely provision of high-quality accessible materials and technologies for all learners who need them, including those with disabilities. While intended to be implemented by a coordinated team of representatives from within a system (i.e., state, district, higher ed institution, or workforce agency), each individual representative needs an operational understanding of the Quality Indicators. It is through a collective understanding of individual roles and responsibilities that systems change occurs. The purpose of this guide is to facilitate both individual and collective understanding of the AEM Quality Indicators.

مستخلص: Jesse Shera (1903–1982) was a twentieth-century American librarian and information scientist. This article discusses Shera's social epistemology (SE) and its similarities with structuralism and poststructuralism. Previous research on Shera's SE has clarified its position and influences. John Budd has pointed out that his SE was sociological rather than philosophical, resembling a sociology of knowledge, while Jonathan Furner adduced similarities between Shera's SE and related areas, such as the sociology of science, and showed that Shera's SE was influenced by Paul Otlet. Patrick Wilson frames his body of research as an extension of Shera's SE. Accordingly, I show that Shera's SE exhibits characteristics of structuralism and poststructuralism. Shera argued that the semantic relationship between two groups of written materials depends on the perceptions of the individuals (or groups) involved, rejecting traditional library classification methodology aimed at a universal classification of knowledge that was the contemporary mainstream. This article discusses the background of Shera's poststructuralism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: What are the motivations and sought gratifications leading information science researchers to share and to reuse research data? Research data are both datasets and supplementary materials such as interview guides or questionnaires. The theoretical backgrounds of this study are the Lasswell Formula of Communication, the Uses and Gratifications Theory, and the Self-determination Theory, which formed the basis for the construction of an interview guide and the interpretation of the interview transcripts. We performed 11 in-depth interviews with German information scientists, all with experiences with data. The results demonstrate that research data sharing is not a rare practice among information scientists. Due to problems with different information horizons of the sharing and the reusing researchers, the reusing of data sets is much rarer than the reuse of supplementary materials. مستخلص: The article focuses on the challenges affecting confidence in scientific research, addressing the roles of librarians and publishers in promoting information literacy and collaboration. Topics include the decline in trust due to factors like the pandemic and predatory publishing, the importance of expanding information literacy efforts, and the need for increased transparency and diversification in scholarly communication.

مستخلص: For data information scientists, librarians and academics alike, it is a worrisome sign when information or a file opaquely disappears from the body of scientific literature, even more so when it carries a digital object identifier (DOI). This is because the DOI typically offers a published paper a form of digital permanence. Preprints are being increasingly fused into the publication stream, serving as a prelude to submission to a peer-reviewed journal. One of the main preprint servers is Elsevier's SSRN. This paper, a rare case study, describes three preprints by the same authors related to peer review that were withdrawn (i.e., retracted). Apart from a short notice with identical text ("This paper has been removed from SSRN at the request of the author, SSRN, or the rights holder"), no date of the withdrawals and no explanation were publicly provided. Following queries to the authors and SSRN, the three preprints were reinstated around February 2023. Finally, the original title of two of the preprints was manipulated in the reinstated preprints. This historical case study not only highlights the risks of opaque preprint withdrawals, but also the ease with which information on preprint servers (in this case SSRN) can be modified and/or manipulated. مستخلص: Bottom-up coarse-grained (CG) molecular dynamics models are parameterized using complex effective Hamiltonians. These models are typically optimized to approximate high dimensional data from atomistic simulations. However, human validation of these models is often limited to low dimensional statistics that do not necessarily differentiate between the CG model and said atomistic simulations. We propose that classification can be used to variationally estimate high dimensional error and that explainable machine learning can help convey this information to scientists. This approach is demonstrated using Shapley additive explanations and two CG protein models. This framework may also be valuable for ascertaining whether allosteric effects at the atomistic level are accurately propagated to a CG model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: The present study systematically examines the structure and functions of metasearch engines (MSEs) viz. Dogpile, Metacrawler, DuckDuckGo and Startpage. Further, it identifies the features and services of four metasearch engines and compares them. A checklist method was used to evaluate the four metasearch engines. These check spots are prepared regarding features and services of metasearch engines. The data were collected between April 1 to June 14, 2021, spending two hours daily. Initially, the data was recorded after accessing each MSE, and later, the data was transferred to MS Excel. The study ascertained that out of 101 check spots, Dogpile scored (66) points, Metacrawler (63), DuckDuckGo (71), and Startpage (59). DuckDuckGo is ranked first among all the four metasearch engines with 70.3 %, followed by Dogpile, Metacrawler, and Startpage respectively. A checklist used in the study contains only 101 check spots to compare the metasearch engines. Further, users' perception regarding the four metasearch engines is also not covered in the present study. The present study is the first of its kind, which compares four popular metasearch engines using a checklist method. The outcomes of the study shall help research scholars, librarians, information scientists, faculty members, and common masses choose the appropriate metasearch engine. Further, the study shall also help the developers of e-resources in incorporating more features so that users can benefit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
