الوصف: In this article, the author shows how Catherine of Siena, a mystic who lived in Italy for thirty-three years in the second part of the fourteenth century, known for ecstasies and revelations, put discretion (and prudence, its synonym), the leading virtue in the moral life, at the core of her spirituality, thus becoming a real lover of the truth and a teacher of true freedom. The article contains bibliographical references for the reader’s further study of the writings (Dialogue, Letters, and Prayers) linked to this formidable figure, who was canonized in 1461 and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1970. Catherine’s teaching, firmly anchored in what the Church and her great Doctors have always taught, remains to this day a rich treasure for spiritual growth.

الوصف: The importance of education can never be under-played in any society as it is the most potent weapon left to man in order to transform, change and liberate himself and the society from the slavery of ignorance and backwardness. This is done in order to attain rapid development in all ramifications. The epistemic foundation for the establishment of higher institutions (universities) has been devoted to the production of knowledge and cultural reproduction through the ages. It should be known from the outset that universities are moulded on the foundation and systemic structure of the Western ideologies. But there are salient barriers towards the pursuit of higher education in Africa, which are multi-faceted and multi-dimensional. The thrust of this paper, then, will be to examine the challenges higher education has in Africa, which hinders its process of producing a body of knowledge that will elevate the human conditions and posit it for all-round development. Therefore, the methodology shall be purely analytic in nature.

الوصف: On December 2, 2001, Enron, once one of the world's largest and most re spected companies, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after the discovery of a massive fraud perpetrated by senior management. The subse quent collapse of Enron's auditor, Arthur Andersen LLP (AA), was even more shocking. Mr. Arthur Andersen had built an accounting practice on a solid foundation of personal integrity and technical excellence. He had a reputation of being absolutely honest and is reputed to have lost several prominent clients because he would not change his audit report to suit management. Famous sayings attributed to him are "There is not enough money in Chicago to cause me to change my audit report," and "Think Straight and Talk Straight" (Squires et al., 2003, pp. 31-32). Fifty-five years after his death in 1947, the firm of Arthur Andersen, LLP (AA) was engulfed in the Enron fiasco.

الوصف: Discussion of ecological restoration in environmental ethics has tended to center on issues about the nature and character of the values that may or may not be produced by restored landscapes. In this paper we shift the philosophical discussion to another set of issues: the social and political context in which restorations are performed. We offer first an evaluation of the political issues in the practice of restoration in general and second an assessment of the political context into which restoration is moving. The former focuses on the inherent participatory capacity at the heart of restoration: the latter is concerned with the commodified use (primarily in the United States) and nationalized use (primarily in Canada) to which restoration is being put. By means of a comparative examination of these two areas of inquiry, we provide a foundation for a critical assessment of the politics of restoration based on the politics in restoration.
