الوصف: Freshly removed from the skull, the human brain looks like a cauliflower with the consistency of a creme caramel flan. This mundane object conceals the most complex structure ever discovered. When the interior of the brain is examined with a resolution of a few micrometers, using appropriate staining techniques and light microscopy, it is seen to be composed of a vast number of cells. The full complexity of the ensemble of cells is only finally revealed at the submicron level using electron microscopy. This chapter will show how the application of methods and models based on diffusion can lead to an understanding of how brain cells pack together and some of the remarkable properties of the narrow spaces that separate them.

الوصف: In general, the thermal model has a lower resolution than the structural FE model used for linear thermoelastic analysis. Besides a difference in mesh resolution, the methods used for the thermal and structural analyses differ as well. This complicates the transfer, also referred to as temperature mapping, of the calculated temperatures of the thermal model as temperature loading on the FE model for thermoelastic response calculation. This chapter discusses four different systematic methods for temperature mapping.

الوصف: The article presents design and experimental validation of a thermal actuator based on peltier cell control. The experiments showed the possibility of fine adjustment of large-scale objects in the working range of 24 µm with a sub-micrometer resolution capability. We have proved the main body of the actuator is not affected with heat effects during the actuator control.

الوصف: In this paper we study a dispersive shallow water type model derived from the free surface compressible Navier-Stokes system. The compressible effects allow to capture the acoustic-like waves propagation and can be seen as a relaxation of an underlying incompressible model. The first interest of such a model is thus to capture both acoustic and water waves. The second interest lies in its numerical approximation. Indeed, at the discrete level, the pseudo-compressibility terms circumvent the resolution of an elliptic equation to capture the non-hydrostatic part of the pressure. This drastically reduces the cost of the numerical resolution of dispersive models especially in 2d and 3d.

الوصف: Velocity-map imaging (VMI) is a popular technique in a Coulomb-explosion imaging experiment with the capacity to focus photo-fragments based on their initial velocity vectors. The VMI is capable of achieving this feat as a result of the system of electrostatic lenses with varying potential, which the photo-fragments have to transit. However, despite the focusing capability of the VMI, the measured time-of-flights of the photo-fragments still suffer from a temporal spread, which is a consequence of the initial velocity and spatial spread at the point of formation. To be able to improve the spatial-temporal resolution of the photo-fragments at the point of formation, there is a need for a better understanding of how the system of electrostatic lenses alter the trajectories of the photo-fragments between formation and detection to achieve a velocity map. Also, an expression is derived to resolve the spatial spread of the photo-fragment products.

الوصف: Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is an important diagnostic imaging modality in cardiovascular medicine. Estimation of myocardium motion derived from CMR scans is routinely used to measure the cardiac mechanics. However, tracking a rapidly moving organ can be compromised by artefacts or impaired image quality. To assess how in-plane image resolution and slice sampling in short and long axis scans impact errors in motion tracking, we utilised retrospective gated cardiac computed tomography (CCT) imaging as a surrogate groundtruth for motion estimation across 10 clinical datasets, since these scans have a higher isotropic resolution than CMR and the ability to capture full 3D motion. In our work, the left atrial (LA) and ventricular (LV) cavities were first delineated, and then reconstructed short and long axis images were used in a non-rigid registration method with optimised hyperparameters to track endocardial motion. Finally, global and regional functions in the form of area, circumferential, and longitudinal strains were computed. Our findings showed that tracking LA was more sensitive than LV to changes in the in-plane resolution and magnitude of strain was robust to resolution changes in short axis images, when correlated with the groundtruth (r: 0.87–0.99, \(R^2\): 0.75–0.98). We also found that 9 short axis slices could capture the motion of LV almost as accurately as 36 slices captured in long axis (r: 0.89 vs. 0.90, \(R^2\): 0.80 vs. 0.80), illustrating that the cardiac mechanics measured by short axis scans are more likely to be robust to image artefacts and reconstruction parameters.
