    الوصف: Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the role of attitude, religiosity, awareness and subjective norm toward trust which influences purchase intention regarding Islamic insurance in Indonesia. Design/methodology/approach This research uses quantitative methods. Online questionnaires are distributed and collected for people who already have an insurance policy, have the knowledge and are interested in buying Islamic insurance in Indonesia. A total of 322 valid responses were collected using non probability purposive sampling and snowball sampling method. To achieve the purpose of this study, an analysis using SEM or structural equation model for hypothesis testing was performed. Findings The results show that trust significantly affected purchase intention regarding Islamic insurance. Other than that, trust is significantly influenced by awareness, religiosity and subjective norm. Moreover, the attitude toward trust found that not significantly related. Originality/value The originality of this study is the first research integrating attitude, religiosity, awareness and subjective norm, mediating by trust toward a purchase intention of Islamic insurance in Indonesia.

    الوصف: Purpose The purpose of this study is to integrate and synthesize the Islamic marketing literature, understand the phenomenon and related concepts and provide suggestions for future research. Design/methodology/approach The study uses an integrative review method that emphasizes summarizing and synthesizing the previous literature related to a phenomenon. Findings The findings indicate the emergence of five major themes, namely, Islamic marketing and its perspectives, activities in Islamic marketing, opportunities, controversies and challenges in Islamic marketing, Islamic principles and determinants of consumers’ behavior and awareness toward Islamic products. Each of the major themes consists of sub-themes discussed in detail in the results and discussion sections. Research limitations/implications Like other studies, this integrative literature review has some limitations. These include the methodology undertaken, the lack of explanation of inter-relationship among themes and lack of Islamic theory-based review. These limitations lead to future research directions. Practical implications Marketing managers need a thorough understanding of the Islamic standards and need to develop strategies. Further, there are inter-differences among Muslims, which need to be thoroughly understood by managers. Moreover, marketers can effectively use advertising in creating awareness and increasing demand of halal products. Originality/value This study provides an integrative review of the literature and synthesizes the Islamic marketing literature, which has not been done before.

    الوصف: Purpose The study aims to identify a gap within the extant literature on the inadequacy of earlier extension of the theory of reasoned action (TRA) and theory of planned behavior (TPB) to accommodate the peculiarity of Muslims majority countries that experiencing poverty growth in modeling the factors influencing the acceptability of Islamic financial products and services. To address this gap, this study expands the aforementioned theories through the integration of customer financial condition through the analyzes of both direct and indirect effects. Design/methodology/approach The quantitative research design was deployed through data, which was collected from samples of microentrepreneurs within the agricultural sector of northwestern Nigeria. The data from this sample was analyzed through hierarchical regression analysis. Findings The findings confirmed significant direct effects of all the original TPB variables; attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control on acceptance intention of Islamic microfinance. More pioneering, the study established a significant direct negative effect of customer financial condition on the acceptance of Islamic microfinance among agribusiness customers. It further established the indirect (moderating) effects of customer financial condition on the influence of subject norms and perceived behavioral control on acceptance intention of Islamic microfinance, however, such indirect effect was not established in relation to the influence of attitude. Research limitations/implications The findings implied that the providers of Islamic financial products and services should target Nigeria’s frontier market as a potential avenue for expanding their existing market share. More specifically, the agricultural sector of northwestern Nigeria could be given focus in such a marketing strategy. In terms of social impact, providing necessary finances to the agricultural sector will further enhance employment creation and reduce poverty in the northwestern region. Originality/value Despite several extensions of TRA and TPB in various settings, this could the first study which examined both direct and indirect effects of customer financial condition not only in relation to the acceptance of Islamic microfinance but also all other Islamic financial products and services.

    الوصف: Advertisement, being one of the most effective marketing tools, induces customers to purchase their products and encourages them to behave in a certain way. This study focused on the relationship between demographic and cultural values of young Saudi Arabians. Primary data was collected from a total of 284 respondents from the Riyadh region using an online survey. The survey questionnaire was adopted from previous relevant studies and modified according to the objectives of the understudy by considering the cultural values apparent to Saudi citizens. The corresponding sub-items were also designed on a 5-point Likert scale. Based on the theoretical aspects presented in the literature, the hypotheses were formulated to find the substantial contributions of the sample data. The correlation using SPSS revealed that gender and marital status had no relation to the segmentation of advertisements, whereas other vital cultural factors such as religion, language, manners and customs, social institutions, aesthetics, and traditions demonstrated a strong linkage with segmenting firms’ advertisements. The study revealed important implications for international product advertisers and market communicators. It also provided several directions for future researchers.

    الوصف: Purpose The development of the banking industry is encouraging increasingly fierce competition. In the face of banking competition, Islamic banks need to build customer loyalty by paying attention to ethical aspects. Ethics has an essential role in forming and preserve relationships between companies and customers in the long term. The measurement model of salesperson ethical behavior in this study was built using the Islamic-based marketing concept. This study aims to test empirical models of Islamic ethics-based salesperson behavior in increasing customer loyalty of Islamic banks through the aspect of customer trust. Design/methodology/approach Research data were obtained from 165 Islamic bank customers in the Central Java, Indonesia, using the purposive sampling method. Data analysis in this study uses structural equation modeling. Findings The study shows that the Islamic ethics-based salesperson behavior has a positive effect on customer trust in a salesperson, customers’ trust in Islamic banks and customer loyalty. Customer trust in a salesperson has positively and significantly influenced customer trust in Islamic banks and customer loyalty. Customer trust in Islamic banks has a positive and significant effect on customer loyalty. Practical implications This study’s results are expected to be used to reference maintenance salesperson in Islamic banking to behave based on Islamic principles. Islamic marketing principles need to be applied through salespersons behaving realistically (al-Waqi’iyyah) and humanistic concepts (insaniyyah). The application of Islamic ethics can limit and avoid deviant behavior from salespeople that is detrimental to consumers and organizations. The behavior of salespeople based on Islamic ethics will build consumer trust in both organizations and salesperson so that it has implications for consumer loyalty. Originality/value This paper provides new findings to understand Islamic banking consumer loyalty that focuses on Islamic ethical salesperson behavior point of view. This paper also presents a new measurement of research variables from an Islamic perspective in examining the role of Islamic ethics-based salesperson behavior toward banking customer loyalty. This study takes the object of research in Islamic banking that has different characteristics from conventional financial institutions.

    الوصف: Purpose With the advent of technology and internet banking, the role and value of bank’s websites have increased. Additionally, the Islamic banking boom has also increased the role of Shariah-based banking in the market. But neither web-based information nor Shariah board members have been investigated for their possible effects on the branding of Islamic banks. Against this backdrop, this study aims to explore web-based information and Shariah board as a source of branding of Islamic financial institutions (IFIs). Design/methodology/approach An interpretivism-based thematic inquiry is carried out through semi-structured interviews of 22 customers of Islamic banks. Findings The findings of the study highlighted the fact that customers’ perceived web-based information is in line with the Shariah objectives but showed low level of trust on that information. They assumed that the practices are not consistent with this information. Moreover, the Shariah board members were considered as brand ambassadors, and customers valued board members more than the Shariah board and Islamic bank itself. Findings further highlight the more knowledge customers have about the Shariah board members (experience, qualification, achievements, etc.) the greater is the impact on the branding of the IFIs. Originality/value This study offers a novel perspective by considering the value of web-based information and Shariah board on branding of Islamic banks. As there is no such study available in literature, up to the best of researchers' knowledge, the qualitative inquiry may suffice the study objectives and research questions.

    الوصف: Purpose There are some Muslims who only hold conventional bank accounts, regardless that some believe that such banks implement an interest charging system that contradicts Islamic law concerning the prohibition of charging interest. This study aims to investigate the consumers’ tendency to regret (CTR) related to purchasing conventional banking services (CTR-P) and the failure to purchase Islamic banking services (CTR-NP). Then, this study investigates whether CTR-P and CTR-NP translate into regret, which, in turn, leads to the intention to save money in Islamic banks. Design/methodology/approach A survey of Indonesian Muslims who only hold conventional banking accounts was conducted. There were 323 participants. This study then applied a partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to test the hypotheses. Findings This study found that a combination of CTR-P and CTR-NP translates into regret, which then drives the intention to save money in Islamic banks as a means of releasing such feelings of regret. The findings suggest that Muslims evaluate their banking decision on an Islamic basis and that making a decision that contradicts the prohibition of charging interest tends to cause regret. Islamic banks have opportunities to penetrate the market by focusing on Muslims who only hold accounts with conventional banks. Originality/value The findings of this study help advance understanding of Muslims’ negative emotional experience due to making a decision that they perceive contradicts Islamic law. Also, the findings help predict the strategy that Muslims use to neutralize such a negative emotional experience.

    الوصف: PurposeThis paper is an empirical study of the effect of the characteristics of the Sharia supervisory board (SSB) on the financial performance of Islamic banks.Design/methodology/approachUsing 42 Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Islamic banks outside the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and non-Islamic countries during the 2011/2018 period, a random-effects generalized lease square method for the regression analyzes is applied.FindingsThe obtained results show that the characteristics of the SSB affect the financial performance of Islamic banks. The results also affirm that a large-sized board of directors and the number of SSB meetings improve banking performance while the cross-mandate seems to destroy it. On the other hand, the SSB members’ competence and reputation and the proportion of women sitting in SSB have no impact on the financial performance of Islamic banks.Research limitations/implicationsThis paper gives a comprehensive literature survey on the effect of the characteristics of the SSB on the financial performance of Islamic banks.Practical implicationsThis study offers insights into the practitioner and Islamic banking regulators interested in enhancing the legitimacy of corporate governance in Islamic financial institutions.Originality/valueThis paper is among the few studies that investigate the effect of the characteristics of SSB on the financial performance of Islamic banks in particular in Islamic banks in the MENA region outside the GCC and in non-Islamic countries.

    الوصف: Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify the impact of ethical judgements, depending on religiosity level of consumers, on decisions of buying or not buying products from supermarkets selling alcoholic beverages. Design/methodology/approach The scope of this study covers consumers from province of Mus in Turkey who indicate they go shopping at supermarkets. Accordingly, data are collected from 362 consumers via face-to-face survey and the results are evaluated through regression analysis. Findings According to analysis, it was found that the internal and external religiosity of the consumers positively affected their ethical judgement towards the markets selling alcoholic beverages. Besides, it is concluded that the ethical judgements of consumers have a positive impact on boycott decisions against supermarkets selling alcoholic beverages. Originality/value The survey contributes to relevant literature by putting forth the impact of ethical judgements of consumers, associated with their level of religiosity, on their decisions as to preference of supermarkets. Moreover, this study is consistent with the previous studies and supports the conclusion that the ethical decisions are affected by the extrinsic and intrinsic levels of religiosity; however, they are more affected by the intrinsic levels of religiosity.

The author also presents personal viewpoints regarding the discipline. Conventional social marketing practices in various Muslim and non-Muslim countries have been studied with theoretical discussions. A critical approach has been applied in this study to assimilate Islamic marketing principles with existing social marketing theories.FindingsThe author proposes a distinct discipline of Islamic Marketing, which is termed as Islamic Social Marketing. The new discipline has been compared with conventional social marketing framework and practices to demonstrate its distinctive features. The critical analysis and discussion exhibit that the proposed new discipline has both similarities and dissimilarities with present social marketing theories and practices.Originality/valueThis study contributes to Islamic Marketing discipline by proposing a unique field that has been termed as “Islamic Social Marketing”. Although many studies have been conducted on Islamic marketing, the analysis of social marketing in light of Islamic Marketing principles remains clearly in a vacuum-like situation. The current research work is a starting point for academic discussions on this issue that can provide guidelines to develop social marketing intervention programs for Muslim-dominated societies and assist Islamic value-driven social marketing practitioners.
