مستخلص: Problem: A quality improvement project was conducted to evaluate the use of an integrative wellness program to improve mood and relieve chemotherapy-induced nausea in children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer at a freestanding children's hospital. Background: A wide variety of integrative wellness programs can assist in minimizing symptoms. Yoga and mindfulness create peace and balance by the practice of breathing and meditation, which can promote relaxation and stress reduction. Interventions: An integrative wellness program was implemented for hematology/ bone-marrow services in an outpatient clinic setting and inpatient unit within an urban pediatric hospital. The program included yoga, mindfulness, and aromatherapy. Nineteen patients participated in yoga, 18 patients in mindfulness, and 9 patients in aromatherapy over the course of one year. External specialty-trained personnel provided therapies in yoga and mindfulness in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. Additionally, while specialty-trained nurses provided aromatherapy to inpatients. Outcomes measured included nausea and mood pre- and post-implementation using established tools. Results: Results showed an increase in scores in the positive direction for yoga and mindfulness interventions from pre-implementation to post-implementation achieving significance in all four constructs of The Brief Mood Introspection Scale (Mayer & Gaschke, 1988). There was a reported decrease in nausea symptoms after the aromatherapy intervention and an overall satisfaction with the program. Conclusion: Integrative wellness is a positive intervention for this patient population and is beneficial to increase a child/adolescent's mood level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: Purpose: To improve understanding of the facilitators and barriers affecting the integration of mind-body medicine (MBM) into primary care and describe the experiences of mind-body primary care providers. Methods: The authors conducted a qualitative analysis of semi-structured telephone interviews with mind-body primary care providers selected via a maximum variation sampling strategy. Results: Four main themes emerged: (1) MBM is an approach to patient care as well as a set of modalities, (2) time and reimbursement pose significant challenges to MBM, (3) support for MBM in one's practice setting is a key facilitator, and (4) commitment to MBM comes from personal experience. "Insufficient time'' was the most highly ranked barrier among survey respondents. Interviewees described innovative strategies to overcome barriers, including customized intake forms, MBM training for staff, MBM group visits, and discounted referrals for low-income patients. Conclusions: While increased MBM and self-care training for providers may facilitate the integration of MBM into primary care, systematic changes are needed to decrease time pressures on providers and incentivize patient wellness. Despite barriers, providers are using innovative strategies to provide mind-body primary care in diverse practice settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: Sebastian Kneipp (1821-1897) is seen as a vital link between the European nature cure movement of the 19th century and American naturopathy. He promoted a holistic treatment concept founded on five pillars: hydro- and phytotherapy, exercise, balanced nutrition, and regulative therapy. Kneipp attempted to bridge the gap with allopathic medicine, and many modern treatments that are based on his methods indeed blend wellness elements with naturopathic medicine and biomedicine. Because Kneipp's approach to health and healing today are mainly covered in German literature, this paper aims to provide a broader international audience with insights into his life and his treatment methods and to highlight the profound influence Kneipp has had to this day on natural and preventive medicine. The paper emphasizes in particular the continued popularity of Kneipp's holistic approach to health and well-being, which is evident in the many national and international Kneipp Associations, the globally operating Kneipp Werke, postgraduate qualifications in his treatment methods, and the existence of more than 60 accredited Kneipp spas and health resorts in Germany alone. Abstract (English): BACKGROUND: Functional training has been popular in recent years, but it is mainly applied in sports training field. There are still insufficient studies and applications in medical and health fields. OBJECTIVE: To provide a theoretical basis for relevant research in sports, medical and health fields, through a more comprehensive and in-depth exploration and analysis of the research hot spots, ideological trends, frontiers and development trends of international functional training in the field of medical and health care. METHODS: The 2 206 high-quality articles addressing health-related functional training during 2012-2022 were exported from the Web of Science Core Set Database as the object of analysis. Combined with research methods such as literature analysis, Citespace V analysis software was used for visual analysis of keywords, subject categories and highly cited literatures. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The number of articles published on functional training in the field of health is on the rise. There are more articles from the United States, with a larger impact. China also has a high volume of publications, but the impact and depth of research is lacking. Improving physical and mental health and cognitive ability of middle-aged and older people is the main focus, followed by preventing sports injuries and promoting recovery in athletes. In the future, more research will be conducted on teenagers, the disabled and other groups, and there will be a continued increase in injury prevention and recovery promotion for athletes. Chinese scholars have less research on the effects of functional training on the physical health of the general public, and more attention should be paid to improving the physical and mental health of the general public. مستخلص: Objective: This study examined the prevalence, patterns, and predictors of t'ai chi and qigong use in the U.S. general population. Design: Cross-sectional survey. Methods: Data from the 2012 National Health Interview Survey (n = 34,525). Weighted frequencies were used to analyze lifetime and 12-month prevalence and patterns of use. Independent predictors of practice were analyzed by using logistic regression models. Analyzes were conducted in 2015. Results: The lifetime and 12-month prevalence of t'ai chi/ qigong practice were 3.1% and 1.2%, respectively. The 12-month prevalence was associated with age older than 30 years; being African American, Asian, or other ethnic origin; living in the West; being college educated and single; and being a light to heavy alcohol consumer. Almost 39% of users attended formal classes. T'ai chi/ qigong was practiced for wellness/disease prevention and to improve energy, immune function, athletic performance, or memory/concentration. Stress, arthritis, and joint problems were the most frequent specific health problems for practice. Conclusions: Despite an only marginal increase of t'ai chi/ qigong practice in the United States over the past 10 years, the proportion of minorities among practitioners has increased significantly. Gaps between clinical application and research are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), ranging from herbal products to chiropractic and acupuncture, continues to grow in popularity. Nearly 40 percent of American adults use alternative therapies, spending some $34 billion annually. Nevertheless, critics cite thousands of studies that question the effectiveness of many of these treatments. In addition, they argue that the safety and quality of herbal products and other supplements can be ensured only if they are subjected to the same rigorous regulation as prescription drugs. But proponents counter that many studies have shown promising practices, especially meditation and other mind-body interventions that reduce stress. Integrating such approaches into conventional medicine, they say, is the best way to provide patient-centered care. Proponents also say the rise of alternative medicine in medical school curricula, hospitals and health care systems suggests that what was once called "unconventional" is here to stay. مستخلص: Research on quality of life (QOL) factors important for younger adults (ages 18–45 years old) with osteoarthritis (OA) is limited. This study utilizes an online survey method to conduct an expert panel review of QOL domains for this population. Health provider and young adult perspectives of living with OA were captured and compared. Results indicate that providers are underestimating the impact OA is having on a variety of QOL factors for younger adults. Overall, these results reveal critical QOL domains to consider during assessment and when considering intervention strategies aimed at improving the lives of younger adults with this chronic disease. Implications for social work are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: Copper reduction, macrobiotic diets and cytoluminescent therapy were among the exciting cancer treatments on the docket at a conference presented by the Center for Integrative Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Aware that copper is key to the angiogenesis process, Doctor George J. Brewer conducted research to see whether inexpensive drug called tetrathiomolybdate (TM) could safely reduce copper in people with cancer. His hunch paid off, and now Doctor Brewer and his team are studying whether reducing copper by using TM will affect advanced-stage cancer. Kushi macrobiotics is a longevity-enhancing lifestyle that promotes a largely organic, vegetarian diet. Macrobiotic diets have been linked to profound cancer cures. As a cancer treatment, photodynamic light therapy has been around since the early 1900s. Doctors in Ireland have pioneered a variation called cytoluminescent Therapy.
