الوصف: This paper looks into specific cases related to the authors’ personal reflections and experiences with internationalization. They are analyzed from a decolonial perspective, taking into account the specificities of Brazilian public education. The thematic categories of analysis were: (1) the social aim/function of higher education, (2) the impact of internationalization processes on higher education, and (3) the myth of a universal language/planetary unity. It is paramount, especially in times of emergency like ours, that we reflect on the formative, social and political role of universities to respond to ontoepistemological crises such as the one we are immersed in at the moment.

EnglishMaryse Conde's writing focuses on the history of slavery, female identity and memory, maintaining a fruitful dialogue with pictorial imagery. The writer has a painter's view of the world in her apprehension of nature. The myth of the island nourishes a highly feminized imaginary where the woman, foster mother or lover, is identified with the land and the sea. The protagonists of Conde’s novels indomitable as the ocean, struggle in their identity journeys against the constraints of an imposed destiny. The pictorial image, born from the depths of the unconscious, exerts a redeeming role on the figure of the painter, shared by contradictory feelings in his identity construction. Conde valorises the cathartic nature of art, coupled with the joy of procreation experienced by some heroines in their acts of creativity. Conde’s pictorial references recover the images of an individual history rooted in the insularity of the Caribbean and in ancestral Africa. Beyond the beliefs of Conde’s characters prevails the universal language of art. francaisL’ecriture de Maryse Conde, axee sur le passe esclavagiste, l’identite feminine et la memoire, entretient un dialogue fecond avec l’image picturale. الوصف: Although speech errors have served as the primary source of evidence for how the language production system works, there is a lack of studies on naturalistic slips of the tongue in Korean. The present study had two main goals: first, we introduced a new collection of slips produced by native speakers of Korean in a naturalistic setting and provided a general description of their main error patterns. The speech errors were drawn from a corpus of Korean conversations transcribed from tape recordings (Seoul Corpus; Yun et al., 2015), and classified according to the nature of the errors and the type of linguistic units with which each error type occurs. These findings were then compared to those reported from other languages such as some Germanic languages, Spanish, and Mandarin in order to make a preliminary cross-linguistic comparison of error patterns. It was found that Korean showed a wide range of universal language patterns, but also unique patterns which were attributed to the phonological and orthographic structures of Korean.

الوصف: Ah, emojis ☺. Some enthusiastically speak of them as a new universal language. In 2015, the Oxford English dictionary crowned one of them as its word of the year. Sixty million are exchanged daily on Facebook. Along with emoticons and various other smileys, emojis are now part of daily communications. Visual add-ons or superscript, they are meant to indicate intent or add emotions to written messages, which do not benefit from the tone or body language of the interlocutor. As such, they present themselves as tools for clarification, but one can wonder if they do not, too, introduce uncertainty in language. Aimed at barristers as well as jurilinguists, this paper seeks to underline some design and perception biases that can hinder communication, with a focus on rules of evidence and legal methodology. Empirically rooted in Canadian case law, the findings resonate in other jurisdictions, as emojis, indeed, are a global phenomenon.

الوصف: John Wilkins’s Mercury or the Secret and Swift Messenger: Showing How a Man May with Privacy and Speed Communicate His Thoughts to a Friend at Any Distance was first published in 1641. As a book on cryptography presenting a variety of secret means of communication at a distance it seems to have appeared at just the right time, when the biblical curse of the confusion of tongues was doubled by the curse of political confusion on the brink of the English civil war. However, the book seems to be more than just a detailed account of methods of secret writing; its topic gives the author a chance to present his views on language which he would later develop in his life’s work An Essay towards Real Character and a Philosophical Language published in 1668. The Essay had received much greater critical attention than the early pamphlet, which is usually referred to as merely a prelude to an account of his universal language project. Indeed, in the little book on cryptography, Wilkins already demonstrated his awareness of the conventional character of language and its role within the system of human interactions, as well as advertised a project of philosophical language that would enhance communication between all nations and remedy the curse of Babel. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that the value of the pamphlet lies also in the insight that it gives into the seventeenth-century debates on the nature of language and into arguments which were often provided, in equal measure, by theology, Hermetic lore, mythology, literature and early modern science. Wilkins’s meticulous recording of the contradictory views and propositions on language produces a sense of methodological inconsistency that leads to ambiguities and paradoxes. However, in the medley of concepts and the collection of linguistic “curiosities” that Mercury presents, a careful reader will discern the growing mistrust of language as a means of representing reality and as a foundation of knowledge, which was one of the symptoms of the general crisis of representation leading to an epistemological shift that started in the seventeenth century.

الوصف: In this paper, I present a brief overview of conceptions of ‘exotic’ writing systems in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries with particular emphasis on ‘exotic’ forerunners of writing (such as the Peruvian quipus or the wampum belts of the Iroquois) and Egyptian hieroglyphs. The history of writing was often conceived of as a gradual development with a growing degree of complexity by authors like Antoine-Yves Goguet, Jean-Jacques Rousseau or William Warburton. Their description of ‘exotic’ writing systems generally reveals a euro-centric perspective as well as a sometimes inadequate knowledge of the true nature of different writing systems. After a description of several ‘exotic’ forerunners of writing, conceptions of Egyptian hieroglyphs are subjected to a more detailed examination. Given their enigmatic character, hieroglyphs seemed particularly well adapted for use in universal language schemes. In the last part of the paper, I will establish a link between non-alphabetical writing systems ...

الوصف: There is no doubt that music plays an important role in people’s lives and, consequently, in different societies and cultures. Through music, the distinctive features of societies and cultures can be appreciated, while, at the same time, its condition of universal language acts as a means of communication among them. Translation Studies has recently started to pay attention to the relationship between translation and music. The study of the translation of songs, opera and other musical products is a subject that can enrich the field. In addition to this, owing to the peculiar nature of the musical text, the translation of music can be linked to other disciplines within Translation Studies, as is the case with AVT. In this work, we will analyse the similarities and differences between AVT and song translation. We will show that some of the translation strategies used in AVT can be applied to other types of multimodal translation, like song translation. We will also consider some cases in which song translation becomes part of AVT, as happens in the translation of TV series or films in which there are songs.

الوصف: The development of English as a universal language led to the emergence of a new field in English language teaching which is called English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Moreover, English is recently considered as an international language, and with advancements in technology, accordingly, there is a widespread growth in demand for English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses fluctuating in teaching length and mode. The present study, thus, attempts to consider the EAP Learners' Perceptions towards the use of tasks taught in universities as EAP courses for students and what English skills and abilities are required from them on the job.
