Alternate Title: Identity, memory and nostalgia of the neobakala scene from Madrid. (English)

Leste Moyano, Eduardo

Revista de Antropología Social; 2020, Vol. 29 Issue 1, p1-15, 15p

ELECTRONIC dance music, MEMORY, NOSTALGIA, EMOTIONS, TECHNOLOGY

Abstract (English): Neobakalas are adults who build their identity appealing to a nostalgic musical and technological discourse that is used to project a hierarchy over the Electronic Dance Music (EDM), another music scene produced by youngsters. This text explores, through expanded ethnography, the construction of this identity. To do so, it recurs to the concept of music scene, the generations (X, @ and #) defined by Feixa and several proposals around nostalgia (Appadurai, Herzfeld). Nevertheless, this article does not take for granted the nostalgic discourse of the neobakalas and questions it, proposing an alternative one based on memory and history so both can be compared. This comparison between past and present will allow to see how nostalgia erodes and transforms the memory of these subjects, how they have produced several identities in different moments of their lives and how these identities may be understood as answers to a context that constantly alters their lives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract (English): The poetry of Ángel González represents an exceptional testimony of the Spanish Civil War and the Franco regime. Although written during the dictatorship from the perspective of the defeated, it could escape censorship due to its ironic and allusive tone. We will focus on the essential role that music plays as poetic-historical resource to evoke the horrors of war, based on the poem entitled "Penultima Nostalgia" in the "Grado elemental" that will also be the starting point to discuss other poems of Gonzalez where music is used as a symbolic element. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Music can reduce stress and anxiety, enhance positive mood, and facilitate social bonding. However, little is known about the role of music and related personal or cultural (individualistic vs. collectivistic) variables in maintaining wellbeing during times of stress and social isolation as imposed by the COVID-19 crisis. In an online questionnaire, administered in 11 countries (Argentina, Brazil, China, Colombia, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, the UK, and USA, N = 5,619), participants rated the relevance of wellbeing goals during the pandemic, and the effectiveness of different activities in obtaining these goals. Music was found to be the most effective activity for three out of five wellbeing goals: enjoyment, venting negative emotions, and self-connection. For diversion, music was equally good as entertainment, while it was second best to create a sense of togetherness, after socialization. This result was evident across different countries and gender, with minor effects of age on specific goals, and a clear effect of the importance of music in people's lives. Cultural effects were generally small and surfaced mainly in the use of music to obtain a sense of togetherness. Interestingly, culture moderated the use of negatively valenced and nostalgic music for those higher in distress.

This work consists of a series of reflecions woven from multiple experiences found in Mitch Murder, a YouTube channel. We start characterizing the channel itself, the musician by whom it is managed, its publications and the musical–imagetic proposition of synthwave. The Mitch Murder channel offers audiovisual publications, in addition to YouTube comments and other verbal texts. Almost every audiovisual publication involves synthwave musical pieces and a myriad of references to pop culture coming from North of the globe. YouTube commentators frequently associate productions with the 1980s, even though they were created in the twenty-first century, and carry references arising from other decades. Thus we noticed a referentiality breach over the term 80s, caused by the disjunction between the historical period and the multiple entities emerging from the channel’s publications. Trying to better understand what would be that heterogeneous set of elements, we built and adopted the notion of landscape as a interpretative category, a spaciality that can be experienced through multiple perspectives, and in which dwell human and inhumane agents. Finally, we resume the question of referentiality and discuss to what extent the idea of nostalgia is sufficiently strong to address the “80s” tag found in the Mitch Murder channel, pointing out its weaknesses and other possibilities left beside when we emphasize it.

Abstract: The article centers around ethnographic findings of nostalgia from the lived migration between Chilote transnational communities assembled in Punta Arenas (Chile) and Río Gallegos, Argentina. It describes the incorporation of cultural elements linked to the formation of communities, goods circulation, and meanings extension between places of origin and destination. It emphasizes the representation of popular music in Chiloé as a category of analysis and interpretation to understand migratory experiences and multi-centered assemblages. This allows the reflection of methodologies in movement (multilocal ethnography) and localization of multigeographic interacted contexts.
