الوصف: PurposeThe paper aims to clarify some of the most important issues pertinent to the emerging field of Islamic branding (IB). Namely, it answers the following questions: what does IB mean? Why is it important and what makes it different from conventional branding? What are its types? What is the future of IB?Design/methodology/approachThis is a conceptual research paper that builds on the author's vast expertise and knowledge of the Islamic market and Islamic marketing and branding practices, ethics, and motivations to answer the various research questions.FindingsAlthough IB is qualitatively different from conventional branding, international branding experts still view it from the same perspective and, therefore, use conventional branding techniques when branding to Muslims. The motivations to underlying IB are not fully appreciated and the concept remains bound by an abstract understanding of Halal and Haram.Research limitations/implicationsThis is a conceptual paper and, as such, it is subject to the same limitations surrounding similar conceptual academic works.Practical implicationsThe paper will be of great value to marketers because it will help them improve their branding strategies when targeting the Muslim consumer and engaging the Islamic market.Social implicationsThe IB practices have the potential to add a human touch to the exploitive conventional branding practices common among today's marketers.Originality/valueThis is the first paper of its kind that conceptualizes and clarifies the various facets of IB.

الوصف: Purpose The purpose of this study is to find the most effective objects used in Ramadan TV ads of banks operated in Turkey and to determine superiority of the objects among these ads. Design/methodology/approach This research examines used objects in bank TV advertisements for the month of Ramadan by applying content analysis and fuzzy logic method. Findings The most prominent of the findings, as a result of the research, are kids and the elder objects in bank TV commercials. The research findings also reveal the importance of religious objects of Ramadan ads. Research limitations/implications The limitation of this research is non-generalization of the results because of sample size. Future research could explore the impact of objects used in TV ads on consumers with a larger sample size. Practical implications The banks are eager to look for opportunities by launching campaigns during the period of Ramadan. Special occasions such as religious holidays are seen as a new market that should not to be missed by the finance sector, and therefore, the number of bank TV commercials increase dramatically in this term. However, it is important for banks to know which objects are more effective. In this study, it is revealed that objects used in TV ads are more effective. Originality/value This is the first study to examine bank TV commercials during the period of Ramadan. It is also important to reflect Turkish consumers’ perspective and banks’ promotion activities in a Muslim country.

الوصف: PurposeThe purpose of this study is to propose and develop a new perspective in Islamic Marketing by Integrating Islamic Marketing principles and the conventional Social Marketing discipline.Design/methodology/approachThis is a conceptual study that is based on academic contributions gathered from the works of key academicians of Islamic Marketing and Social Marketing discipline. The author also presents personal viewpoints regarding the discipline. Conventional social marketing practices in various Muslim and non-Muslim countries have been studied with theoretical discussions. A critical approach has been applied in this study to assimilate Islamic marketing principles with existing social marketing theories.FindingsThe author proposes a distinct discipline of Islamic Marketing, which is termed as Islamic Social Marketing. The new discipline has been compared with conventional social marketing framework and practices to demonstrate its distinctive features. The critical analysis and discussion exhibit that the proposed new discipline has both similarities and dissimilarities with present social marketing theories and practices.Originality/valueThis study contributes to Islamic Marketing discipline by proposing a unique field that has been termed as “Islamic Social Marketing”. Although many studies have been conducted on Islamic marketing, the analysis of social marketing in light of Islamic Marketing principles remains clearly in a vacuum-like situation. The current research work is a starting point for academic discussions on this issue that can provide guidelines to develop social marketing intervention programs for Muslim-dominated societies and assist Islamic value-driven social marketing practitioners.

الوصف: Purpose Highlighting the need for a profound move towards desecularisation of Islamic scholarship, this conceptual paper aims to clarify the concept of causality from the Islamic marketing research perspective and extends a number of suggestions for improving theory building and hypothesis development in the field. Design/methodology/approach The approach taken is largely conceptual. In addition, this study collates the stated hypotheses in the articles published in this journal in the past five years and analyses the structure of causal statements to uncover key tendencies. Findings The review of historical and current views on causality indicates that most commentators agree that assuming the existence of the necessary connection between cause and effect is misleading. The Islamic traditions based on occasionalism and modern science agree that causal statements reflect, at best, probabilistic assumptions. Research limitations/implications This paper offers a number of insights and recommendations for theory building and hypothesis development in Islamic marketing. By following the occasionalism perspective and the notion of Sunnah of Allah, researchers will be able to build methodologically coherent and genuine Islamic marketing knowledge. Practical implications Correctly stated and tested hypotheses can be used by public policymakers to enforce effective consumer and market policies. Originality/value This paper tackles a complex issue of causality in Islamic marketing research which has not hitherto been discussed well in the literature. This research is also a unique step towards developing pioneering avenues within the domain of Islamic marketing research methodology.

الوصف: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to offer a renewed perspective on the intersections of Islam and marketing. Design/methodology/approach This paper is based on Islamic marketing literature, Islam’s view on human and economic progress, insights from other marketing disciplines and phenomena that focus on treating consumers as “individuals” instead of merely target markets. It consists of an inclusive approach guided by a notion that Islamic marketing debates should not merely attempt to “see” (understand) Muslim consumers or Islamic markets but to also enhance efforts to “see” and (re)discover Islam. Findings This paper reiterates a view of Islam as both a faith and activity; it argues that this view should be the basis of critical analysis on the intersections of Islam and marketing. It also highlights the overlap between Islamic marketing and humanistic marketing, thus offers more inclusive approach to Islamic marketing debates. Based on the arguments of Islam as a deen and marketing as part of human activity, it provides further directions for critical and continuous efforts to explore the questions of “what, why and how” Islam can contribute to the advancement of marketing theory and practice. Originality/value This paper presents a renewed perspective to current debates on Islamic marketing; it stresses on the importance of building a case in which Islam has something to commit to contemporary marketing issues and problems.

الوصف: Visual art marketing strategy is a crucial aspect to be taken into consideration in order to ensure the continuous development of visual art field. It assists visual art practitioners to keep being productive in their efforts to come out with more art pieces to be sold. A few previous researches featured several marketing strategies for visual arts: nevertheless, there is no attempt to look at visual art marketing from the perspective of Islamic shariah. With uncertainties looming on visual art’s place in marketing world, the researchers recognize the need to study the concept of Islamic shariah in visual art marketing strategies. Based on this identified research gap, this study aims to produce a model that is related to the Islamic shariah concept regarding visual art marketing strategies. As a result, the discussion on the model involves several aspects namely: 1) product; 2) production process; 3) market place; 4) retailer / collectors; and 5) transactions. Recommendation for future research direction in this area is a more comprehensive study on Islamic marketing strategies in visual art.

الوصف: Purpose – This study aims to provide insights on the influence of Muslim consumers’ knowledge on products subjected to contemporary fatwa ruling and their subsequent cognitive and behavioural responses. Design/methodology/approach – MANOVA and MANCOVA were used to examine the influence of religious orientation on young Malaysian Muslims’ product knowledge, and the extent of religious orientation and gender on Muslim consumers’ attitude and behaviour towards three contemporary fatwa rulings of products. Findings – Respondents’ religious orientation differentiates their knowledge on fatwa prohibition ruling of selected brand and behaviours. Consumers’ religious orientation and gender explain consumers’ behavioural responses to variables of the Theory of Planned Behaviour for three behaviours. Evidence suggests that ruling types affects (conditional and unconditional) consumers’ responses. Research limitations/implications – Greater insights are provided on Muslims’ motivation to search information of controversial products, and their subsequent perception and behavioural reactions to controversial products. Findings are limited to the Malaysian Muslim consumers. Practical implications – The fact that contemporary fatwa reached young Muslim generations indicates that managers have to be wary of fatwa to predict Muslim consumers’ marketplace behaviours. Social implications – A significant number of young Malaysian Muslims are keeping abreast with contemporary fatwa. This suggests that they received an early and substantial exposure to Islamic way of life through their socialisation. Originality/value – This study offer insights into the understandings of the young Muslim generation regarding contemporary fatwa on products, and revealed significant findings in relation to consumer product knowledge and religious influences on consumer behaviour.
