مستخلص: This article looks at the success of cooperation among livestock producers in the U.S. The remarkable success attained by the California Fruit Growers and the world-wide celebrity of their Sunkist brand gave a notable lead to cooperative marketing in the U.S. Furthermore, those who advertised the success of the California Fruit Growers emphasized unduly one side of it, the fact that it merchandised a perishable fruit. Therefore, there is a feeling abroad today that cooperation is only of decisive value in the case of perishables. The feeling has been strengthen by the inability of U.S. grain growers to carry cooperation beyond the operation of local elevators. The cooperative record in livestock marketing is so substantial that if its significance were realized, it would surely induce a further advance along the agricultural line. One of the best tests of progressive cooperation is its ability to develop complementary cooperative activities. As the associations grow in strength, they find it desirable to make provision for general educational purposes, and a few of the stronger ones have gone further and established cattle loan departments for the making of the loans, directly or through an ad hoc corporation, to carry on feeding operations.

مستخلص: Farmers' organizations and agricultural cooperatives today are leading organizations by which farmers protect and develop their special interests. Some of the more serious problems in human relations affecting farm people have occurred among these organizations. Rural sociologists are called upon increasingly to furnish information to help solve current problems and to guide future developments. The article presents a report of the Rural Sociological Society, which is an ad hoc subcommittee, on farmers' organizations and agricultural cooperatives in the U.S. The present committee's task was to build upon and supplement the good work, which has been done. Problems of farmers' organizations and agricultural cooperatives were to be explored and outlined by them using sociological analysis investigation methods. The major thesis of this report has been that much of the success or failure of farmers' organizations and agricultural cooperatives can be explained in terms of human relations and social processes. The challenge to the committee has been to present major sociological frameworks, which can be used to advantage, to name sociological research areas, within which major problems can be grouped, to formulate sociological statements of some operational problems, which might be investigated and to suggest some specific hypotheses.

مستخلص: The objectives of the study reported in this paper were (1) to measure the value orientation of members toward their cooperative organization and (2) to identify the behavioral correlates of their differential value orientations. Value orientations were measured in terms of the relative importance ascribed by members to eight variables. The method of paired comparisons was used to compute values for the eight items. In general, the data lend support to the hypothesis that (1) members value the cooperative organization primarily as an economic institution and minimize the ideological elements; but (2) differential value orientations are correlated with differential behavior, so that those members whose values are most in agreement with the public goals of the cooperative&ndashnamely, cooperative ideology and economic advantage—are more effective (as measured by organizational participation, satisfaction, and felt responsibilities) than those members who are oriented primarily to economic goals alone. مستخلص: This article discusses the social implications of farmers' cooperative marketing movement in the U.S. It is, of course, too early to predict the possible effects of this movement upon the whole of American country life. The role of the prophet is ever insecure, and when he bases his forecasts upon such social data and theories as are available in the present case, the hazards are great. The most that can be done for the present is to separate the various premises underlying the movement, and to predict certain results from their implications. The experimental process alone will reveal whether or not these predictions possess integrity. At least, they will have this value: they will assist the experimenters in recognizing certain probable alternatives, and this should tend toward a more scientific procedure. Perhaps this is the limit of the social scientist's function. The process of utilizing the cooperative movement as one of the means of extending the farmer's area of social regard implies that the individual farmer is to count for a great deal in the movement.

مستخلص: The article describes the case of Maryland and Virginia Milk Producers Association Inc. v. United States. This case clarified the extent to which agricultural co-operatives are exempt from antitrust laws. Section 6 of the Clayton Act and Section 2 of the Capper-Volstead Act give agricultural immunity from antitrust laws as long as any action does not involve conspiracy with a non-agricultural producer. This co-operative controlled most of the market in the Washington D.C. area, and was found guilty of monopolization when it acquired a distributor, Embassy, which was also a non-producer. Further details are included in the article.
