الوصف: This paper takes as its starting point the question of whether there is an inherent tension between co-production and critique. Whilst the former requires engagement, proximity, situatedness, an inclusive definition of expertise and an action-orientation, the latter has traditionally been equated with disengagement, distance, academic expertise and theory-building. Tracing both the critique of co-production and the critique of critique, I suggest that co-producing critique could be one basis for rescuing both from their detractors. Drawing on my experiences in the Realising Just Cities programme (2010–2020), I argue that co-producing critique from within the university requires designing boundary spaces, intermediating between knowledge claims and balancing between articulated and attributed values for co-production. This gives rise to co-production as an epistemic praxis, not method, characterised by boundary work, epistemic choreography and triple shifting. I argue that whilst academics should argue for altogether different kinds of institutions, there is also value in recognising how we are tethered to our institutions. More attention should be paid to choreographing universities into, rather than out, of critical-engaged work, in order to mobilise their privilege and position for social justice.

الوصف: BackgroundThe provision of palliative care for neonates who are not expected to survive has been slow in mainland China, and this model of care remains in its early stages. Evaluating nurses' attitudes toward neonatal palliative care (NPC) has the potential to provide valuable insight into barriers impeding NPC implementation. This study aimed to translate and adapt the traditional Chinese version of the Neonatal Palliative Care Attitude Scale (NiPCAS) into Simplified Chinese to assess its psychometric properties.MethodsThe NiPCAS is a valid and reliable instrument to measure nurses' attitudes for evidence-based practice. To date, the scale has not been used largely in mainland China. With translation and cultural adaptation, the traditional Chinese version of the NiPCAS was developed into a Simplified Chinese version. Its reliability was tested using internal consistency and test-retest reliability, and its validity was measured using the content validity index and exploratory factor analysis.ResultsA total of 595 neonatal nurses from mainland China were recruited. Twenty-six items in the scale were translated into Simplified Chinese. The scale demonstrated excellent reliability with a Cronbach's α coefficient of 0.87 and a test-retest reliability of 0.88. To support the Simplified Chinese version of NiPCAS, the scale content validity score was 0.98, and the exploratory factor analysis revealed five factors representing the conceptual dimensions of the scale.ConclusionThis study demonstrated the psychometric properties of the Simplified Chinese version of NiPCAS, validated its use as a viable tool for measuring neonatal nurses' attitudes toward NPC, and identified facilitators and barriers to NPC adoption. Our findings suggested supported clinical application in the context of mainland China. A confirmatory factor-analysis approach with a different sample of neonatal nurses is required for further testing of the instrument in the future.

الوصف: Neonatal nurses in mainland China encounter various challenges when it comes to delivering palliative care to neonates. The aim of this study was to determine the barriers and facilitators of neonatal nurses' attitudes to palliative care for neonates in mainland China. A simplified Chinese version of the Neonatal Palliative Care Attitude Scale was piloted, administered, and analyzed using survey methods. Nurses in neonatal intensive care units in mainland China regardless of experience in the field were invited to take part in. Over a five-month period in 2019, we surveyed neonatal nurses from 40 hospitals in five provinces of China. The response rate was 92.5% (N = 550). This study identified eight facilitators and four barriers to neonatal palliative care implementation. In terms of nurses' attitudes on providing palliative care, younger and older nurses were more positive, whereas middle-aged nurses were less so. Nurses' emotional wellbeing was rarely impacted by neonatal death. They considered neonatal palliative care, particularly pain management, to be just as important as curative treatment. Parents were invited to participate in decision-making by nurses. Nurses reported having access to professional counseling and talking about their concerns with other healthcare professionals. The following barriers to neonatal palliative care were identified in this study that were not observed in the original English version scale research in 2009: a lack of clinicians, time, clinical skills, systematic education, neonatal palliative care experience, and social acceptance. Future research is required to investigate each barrier in order to improve the implementation of neonatal palliative care in mainland China.

الوصف: Online learning continues to evolve from computer-based learning to more focus on mobile learning. With this evolution comes the need to develop (and evaluate) instructional strategies effective in mobile learning. This work-in-progress features a description of four innovative instructional strategies adapted from approaches we developed, used, and evaluated successfully in computer-based online learning. These newly adapted strategies –poetweet, photo pairing, reflective mosaic, and the six-word story– all use arts-based approaches. In our past research we found similar strategies developed for online teaching encouraged interaction, enhanced social presence, and facilitated community. This paper features a description of these modified learning activities recreated for the mobile learning environment. We have completed preliminary testing of these newly revised learning activities in m-learning, and in the future we will formally study these to determine if arts-based strategies revised to suit m-learning create the same positive outcomes as were found when we used arts-based approaches in e-learning.

الوصف: The United Nations' Development Goals (SDGs) have been criticized but are nonetheless seen by many as an important, if imperfect, international effort to address climate and environmental change, resource depletion and the unsustainability of contemporary life. Many of the Goals need to be implemented at the local level, yet sub-national governments have not been granted any enhanced status at the UN to facilitate this process. As a result, the role and effectiveness of local governments in localizing the SDGs is dependent on multi-level arrangements within respective national contexts. In this paper we present findings on the challenges facing local authorities in England, namely co-dependent ambivalence, partial holism and narrow practices of knowledge governance. We draw on work carried out collaboratively with local authorities and other stakeholders in Greater Manchester and Sheffield, and a UK-wide national workshop. These challenges explain the relatively low uptake and engagement with the SDGs in the context of wider political and economic concerns compared with international comparator cities. Against this background our research found that making the Goals real, relevant, relatable and relational offered a tactical route to localization for English local government.

الوصف: Urban sustainability is a wicked issue unsuited to management through traditional decision-making structures. Co-productive arrangements, spaces and processes are inscribed in new organisational forms to bridge between diverse forms of knowledge and expertise. This article suggests that local interaction platforms (LIPs) are innovative responses to these challenges, developed in two African and two European cities between 2010 and 2014. Through elaborating the design and practice of the LIPs, the article concludes that the value of this approach lies in its context-sensitivity and iterative flexibility to articulate between internationally shared challenges and distinctive local practices. Six necessary conditions for the evolution of LIPs are presented: anchorage, co-constitution, context-sensitivity, alignment, connection and shared functions. In the context of increased uncertainty, complexity and the demand for transdisciplinary knowledge production, the platform concept has wider relevance in surfacing the challenges and possibilities for more adaptive urban governance.

الوصف: There are many critiques of existing forms of urban governance as not fit for purpose. However, what alternatives might look like is equally contested. Coproduction is proposed as a response to address complex wicked issues. Achieving coproduction is a highly complex and daunting task. Bottom up approaches to the initiation of coproduced governance are seen as fruitful, including exemplification of utopian alternatives though local practices. New ways of seeing the role of conflict in participation are needed, including ways to institutionalise agonistic participatory practices. Coproduction in governance drives demands for forms of knowledge production that are themselves coproductive. New urban governing spaces need to be coproduced through participative transformation requiring experimentation and innovation in re-designing urban knowledge architectures. Future research in this field is proposed which is nuanced, grounded in explicit weightings of different democratic values, and which mediates between recognition of contingency and the ability to undertake comparative analysis.

الوصف: The focus of this study was an exploration of the nature of exceptionally competent oncology nursing practice. Through a combination of data gathering approaches—conversation, observation and narrative exchange—the beliefs, actions and effects of the actions of eight exemplary nurse informants were studied. Analysis revealed three themes related to teh action of the exemplary nurses: Dialogue in silence, mutual touch and sharing the lighter side of life. Additional analysis led to a category called effects of nursing actions. Again, three themes were highlighted as effects: Affirmation of the nurse and patient, connecting and joint transcendence.

الوصف: In this paper selected findings of a qualitative study of eight exemplary oncology nurses are presented. The focus is on the views of these nurses about key elements of nursing practice, namely, the nature of health, human beings, nurse-patient relationships, nursing care, and the nursing environment. In the first part of the paper, the research methodology used in the study is outlined. Subsequently, the oncology nurses’ beliefs about the five central components of nursing practice are described and related to Jean Watson’s theory of nursing.
