الوصف: Freshwater turtles represent one of the most common pets released in urban water bodies. In Europe, after the ban on the import of Trachemys scripta, other non-native turtle species now dominate the legal pet trade. Some of these species have high invasive potential, such as the well-known slider turtle, but their diffusion outside their native range is poorly known. This work summarises presence data about non-native freshwater turtles, different from slider turtles T. scripta, into two urban parks located at the northern boundary of the Milan outskirts (Italy, Lombardy). Turtle detections were obtained merging field surveys conducted from 2014 to 2020, with sparse pictures taken by occasional observers. The situation depicted shows, in addition to the ubiquitous spread of slider turtle subspecies and hybrids in both parks, the frequent presence of other multiple genera such as Pseudemys and Graptemys. Isolated individuals of Apalone spinifera, Graptemys ouachitensis, Mauremys sinensis, Pelomedusa subrufa and Sternotherus carinatus were also found. I also detected one Emys orbicularis, probably escaped or released.

الوصف: Sturgeon aquaculture production has increased worldwide, particularly in Italy, yet there is little information about diseases that affect sturgeons. With this study we describe the results of screening for bacterial infections during monitoring campaigns carried out from 2014 to 2017. A total of 402 sturgeons from six sturgeon farms with one or more reared sturgeon species among five species and two hybrids were analysed. Bacteriological exam was positive in 93 individuals (23%) and negative in the remaining 309 (77%). Generally, no external or internal macroscopic lesions were present, though some specimens showed skin lesions, liver anaemia or splenomegaly, which are non‐pathognomonic signs of bacterial infection. The majority of the isolated bacteria were opportunistic. This knowledge base is important to help create a bacterial profile of sturgeons reared in Italy.

الوصف: Summary Buccal swabbing is a minimally invasive method to obtain DNA and biological material from humans and animals, including fish. Reports on buccal swabbing in fish are few and only for a limited number of species. Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is an important animal model and because the yield of DNA may vary among and within different species in individuals of different sizes, it was selected as useful to optimize the buccal DNA collection in this species. Different storage methods were evaluated, aimed at DNA preservation by limiting DNA degradation and bacterial growth, using commonly available and inexpensive reagents. DNA quality was also tested by amplification of a single-copy nuclear gene and a mitochondrial gene. The results suggest that ethanol is the best storage choice for buccal swab sampling in fish genetic studies, as well as suitable for small-bodied rainbow trout.

الوصف: We provide a comprehensive overview of the status of fish assemblages in eight Italian subalpine lakes using multiple data sources: historical records, standardised sampling and fishery catch statistics. Thirty-four fish species were recorded, twenty of which are native, seven introduced historically and another seven introduced recently. The number of fish species in individual lakes has increased by between 25 and 65% from 1855 to the present, with the increase being higher in the larger lakes. Non-native species contributed between 4.0 and 71.5% to standardised catches by numbers and between 4.8 and 65.1% by biomass. Roach Rutilus rutilus and pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus dominated electrofishing and benthic catches by number, while open-water catches were dominated by the coregonids European whitefish Coregonus lavaretus and gangfish Coregonus macrophthalmus. In terms of biomass, electrofishing catches were dominated by crucian carp Carassius carassius, largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides and wels catfish Silurus glanis, benthic catches were dominated by roach, European whitefish and crucian carp, and open-water catches by coregonids. Commercial fisheries are important ecosystem services provided by subalpine lakes, with their harvests now dominated by non-native species. To deliver effective biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services provision, the prioritisation of targets and interventions of management of non-native species is needed.

الوصف: Non-dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (NDL-PCBs) contribute to the dietary intake of total PCBs. They are consumed via ingestion of contaminated fish and fishery products. Thus, it is important to quantify their levels in aquatic organisms in order to evaluate the risks associated with fish consumption by humans. In 2013, an advisory against consumption of fish from the River Roya (IT) was disseminated after NDL PCBs were found to exceed maximum levels set by EU Regulations. We investigated the presence of NDL PCBs in eel, trout and barbel from the River Roya. We found concentrations in the range of 9.2-27.6 ng g(-)(1)ww in barbel, 9.2-97.0 ng g(-1)ww in trout and 9.0-239.5 ng g(-1)ww in eel. The distribution of congeners among different species did not show significant variations and was characterized by a higher proportion of 153, 138 and 180 congeners, according to their high resistance to metabolic degradation.

الوصف: Currently, land abandonment constitutes a serious threat for many species tied to semi-natural grasslands. In southern Europe, the conservation of many grassland bird communities largely depends on low-intensity mountain farming. In this study, we analysed the effects of the main farming practices promoting grassland maintenance, i.e. grazing and mowing, on species richness of a Prealpine grassland bird community and on the breeding densities of the two commonest grassland species, the skylark (Alauda arvensis Linnaeus, 1758) and the tree pipit (Anthus trivialis Linnaeus, 1758). The two study sites were located between 1100 and 2000 m above sea level in the Italian central Prealps. Grassland species richness was positively affected by grazing, and increased with increasing distance from the nearest woodland. Skylark density was positively influenced by mowing, grassland cover extent and distance from woodland, with the latter effect occurring only at a single study site. Finally, tree pipit densit...

الوصف: The Pacific oyster is one of the world's most widespread bivalves and a suitable species for biomonitoring trace elements in marine environments thanks to its bioaccumulation ability. As it is also an edible mollusc, concentrations of harmful elements in its tissues must be monitored. For these purposes, 464 wild individuals were collected from 12 sites along the Italian coasts. The concentration of fourteen trace elements (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, Sn, Tl, and Zn) in their tissues was quantified. Among the three heavy metals, cadmium, lead, and mercury, none exceeded the maximum limit for in food set by European Union regulations but Cd in one sample from the Varano Lagoon resulted extremely close to this value. Contamination by Hg of the northern Adriatic and Orbetello Lagoons was also observed. Moreover, there was a positive association between the lagoon's environmental conditions and the bioaccumulation of this element in oysters. Despite the ban instituted 15 years ago on the use of Sn in antifouling paints, this element is still present in several marine environments, as demonstrated in the oysters sampled from harbour areas. Samples collected from harbours also showed very high concentrations of Cu and Zn due to the ability of oysters to accumulate these elements, which have replaced Sn in antifouling paints. Analysis of the samples from most sites indicated a low risk of human exposure to harmful elements through oyster consumption; nonetheless, chemical sanitary controls should focus primarily on Cd, Cu, and Zn.

الوصف: Odonata are usually regarded as bioindicators and model organisms in many studies and are subjected to increasing threats worldwide. Such insects populate freshwater ecosystems at both natural and urban landscapes and they are also well-known by common people. This work is aimed at summarizing and updating the current knowledge concerning Odonata species inhabiting two parks located at the northern boundary of the Milan outskirts (Italy, Lombardy). Occupancy status for odonate species were obtained merging the field data of surveys conducted during 2014 and 2015 with spare information from specialistic websites and forums, grey literature, and pictures collected at the same sites by occasional observers. The total number of species found in both parks showed an increase of species richness when compared with two previous studies. Morevoer, Odonata communities of the two parks showed a common chorological composition and similarity in the species assemblages. This work had also a positive impact about the perception of urban biodiversity: some of the untrained observers, who shared their pictures for species identification, rapidly acquired sufficient knowledge to easily recognize the most common species present in both parks.

الوصف: Perfluoroalkylated substances (PFASs) are highly fluorinated aliphatic compounds with high thermal and chemical stability, used in a range of industrial applications. Extensive screening analyses in biota samples from all over the world have shown the bioaccumulation of PFAS into higher trophic levels in the food chain. Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluoroctanoic acid (PFOA) are potential reproductive and developmental toxicants and are considered to be emerging endocrine disrupters. Ingestion of fish and other seafood is considered the main source of exposure of these contaminants. Here, we quantified PFOS and PFOA by LC-MS/MS in muscle samples of European perch from Lake Varese, Italy. PFOS was detected in all samples with concentrations of up to 17.2 ng g(-1). Although the reported values were lower than the recommended total daily intake (TDI) proposed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), fish from Lake Varese may be a significant source of dietary PFOS exposure.
