GEOFIT is a part of INEA’s Energy Portfolio Low Carbon Economy (LCE), Renewable Energy Technologies (RET) and brings together 24 partners from 10 European countries to work on the development of novel and smart shallow geothermal systems. This paper introduces the project.

    الوصف: In the following work, an attempt to conciliate the Ricci flow conjecture and the Cobordism conjecture, stated as refinements of the Swampland distance conjecture and of the No global symmetries conjecture respectively, is presented. This is done by starting from a suitable manifold with trivial cobordism class, applying surgery techniques to Ricci flow singularities and trivialising the cobordism class of one of the resulting connected components via the introduction of appropriate defects. The specific example of $\Omega^{SO}_4$ is studied in detail. A connection between the process of blowing up a point of a manifold and that of taking the connected sum of such with $\mathbb{CP}^n$ is explored. Hence, the problem of studying the Ricci flow of a $K3$ whose cobordism class is trivialised by the addition of $16$ copies of $\mathbb{CP}^2$ is tackled by applying both the techniques developed in the previous sections and the classification of singularities in terms of ADE groups.

    الوصف: Given the important role of the brain in regulating endurance performance, this comparative study sought to determine whether professional road cyclists have superior inhibitory control and resistance to mental fatigue compared to recreational road cyclists.After preliminary testing and familiarization, eleven professional and nine recreational road cyclists visited the lab on two occasions to complete a modified incongruent colour-word Stroop task (a cognitive task requiring inhibitory control) for 30 min (mental exertion condition), or an easy cognitive task for 10 min (control condition) in a randomized, counterbalanced cross-over order. After each cognitive task, participants completed a 20-min time trial on a cycle ergometer. During the time trial, heart rate, blood lactate concentration, and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were recorded.The professional cyclists completed more correct responses during the Stroop task than the recreational cyclists (705±68 vs 576±74, p = 0.001). During the time trial, the recreational cyclists produced a lower mean power output in the mental exertion condition compared to the control condition (216±33 vs 226±25 W, p = 0.014). There was no difference between conditions for the professional cyclists (323±42 vs 326±35 W, p = 0.502). Heart rate, blood lactate concentration, and RPE were not significantly different between the mental exertion and control conditions in both groups.The professional cyclists exhibited superior performance during the Stroop task which is indicative of stronger inhibitory control than the recreational cyclists. The professional cyclists also displayed a greater resistance to the negative effects of mental fatigue as demonstrated by no significant differences in perception of effort and time trial performance between the mental exertion and control conditions. These findings suggest that inhibitory control and resistance to mental fatigue may contribute to successful road cycling performance. These psychobiological characteristics may be either genetic and/or developed through the training and lifestyle of professional road cyclists.

    الوصف: Maximal exercise capacity after heart transplantion (HTx) is reduced to the 50-70% level of healthy controls when assessed by cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) despite of normal left ventricular function of the donor heart. This study investigates the role of donor heart β1 and β2- adrenergic receptor (AR) polymorphisms for maximal exercise capacity after orthotopic HTx.CPET measured peak VO2 as outcome parameter for maximal exercise in HTx recipients ≥9 months and ≤4 years post-transplant (n = 41; mean peak VO2: 57±15% of predicted value). Donor hearts were genotyped for polymorphisms of the β1-AR (Ser49Gly, Arg389Gly) and the β2-AR (Arg16Gly, Gln27Glu). Circumferential shortening of the left ventricle was measured using magnetic resonance based CSPAMM tagging.Peak VO2 was higher in donor hearts expressing the β1-Ser49Ser alleles when compared with β1-Gly49 carriers (60±15% vs. 47±10% of the predicted value; p = 0.015), and by trend in cardiac allografts with the β1-AR Gly389Gly vs. β1-Arg389 (61±15% vs. 54±14%, p = 0.093). Peak VO2 was highest for the haplotype Ser49Ser-Gly389, and decreased progressively for Ser49Ser-Arg389Arg > 49Gly-389Gly > 49Gly-Arg389Arg (adjusted R2 = 0.56, p = 0.003). Peak VO2 was not different for the tested β2-AR polymorphisms. Independent predictors of peak VO2 (adjusted R2 = 0.55) were β1-AR Ser49Gly SNP (p = 0.005), heart rate increase (p = 0.016), and peak systolic blood pressure (p = 0.031). Left ventricular (LV) motion kinetics as measured by cardiac MRI CSPAMM tagging at rest was not different between carriers and non-carriers of the β1-AR Gly49allele.Similar LV cardiac motion kinetics at rest in donor hearts carrying either β1-AR Gly49 or β1-Ser49Ser variant suggests exercise-induced desensitization and down-regulation of the β1-AR Gly49 variant as relevant pathomechanism for reduced peak VO2 in β1-AR Gly49 carriers.

    الوصف: Discrete variational methods show excellent performance in numerical simulations of different mechanical systems. In this paper, we introduce an iterative procedure for the solution of discrete variational equations for boundary value problems. More concretely, we explore a parallelization strategy that leverages the capabilities of multicore CPUs and GPUs (graphics cards). We study this parallel method for higher-order Lagrangian systems, which appear in fully-actuated problems and beyond. The most important part of the paper is devoted to a precise study of different convergence conditions for these methods. We illustrate their excellent behavior in some interesting examples, namely Zermelo's navigation problem, a fuel-optimal navigation problem, interpolation problems or in a fuel optimization problem for a controlled 4-body problem in astrodynamics showing the potential of our method.

    الوصف: Background. Despite advances in surgical repair of hiatus hernias, there remains a high radiological recurrence rate. We performed a novel technique incorporating bilateral oesophageal fixation and evaluated outcomes, principally symptom improvement and hernia recurrence. Methods. A retrospective study was performed on a prospective database of patients undergoing hiatus hernia repair with bilateral oesophageal fixation. Retrospective and prospective quality of life (QOL), PPI usage, and patient satisfaction data were obtained. Hernia recurrence was assessed by either barium swallow or gastroscopy.     الوصف: Abstract To improve surgical visualization and facilitate the procedure, one-lung ventilation (OLV) is frequently used during thoracic surgery. Although generally well tolerated, the ventilation–perfusion inequality induced by OLV may lead to a decrease in oxygenation and, at times, hypoxemia. Effective treatment algorithms and strategies are necessary for the treatment of hypoxemia during OLV to ensure that the technique can be continued without interruption and allow for completion of the surgical procedure. Treatment strategies may include applying positive end expiratory pressure to the nonoperative lung, continuous positive airway pressure or low flow oxygen insufflation to the operative lung, decreasing anesthetic agents that interfere with hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV), or switching to total intravenous anesthesia. Although less commonly employed, α-adrenergic agonists may also improve oxygenation during OLV by augmenting HPV. We present a 12-year-old girl who developed hypoxemia during OLV, which was not corrected by the usual maneuvers. Hypoxemia was successfully treated with a phenylephrine infusion. The potential applications of α-adrenergic agonists such as phenylephrine in the treatment of hypoxemia during OLV are discussed and its physiologic basis reviewed.
