The combination of a 4-node quadrilateral mixed interpolation of tensorial components element (MITC4) and the cell-based smoothed finite element method (CSFEM) was formulated and implemented in this work for the analysis of free vibration and unidirectional buckling of shell structures. This formulation was applied to numerous numerical examples of non-woven fabrics. As CSFEM schemes do not require coordinate transformation, spurious modes and numerical instabilities are prevented using bilinear quadrilateral element subdivided into two, three and four smoothing cells. An improvement of the original CSFEM formulation was made regarding the calculation of outward unit normal vectors, which allowed to remove the integral operator in the strain smoothing operation. This procedure conducted both to the simplification of the developed formulation and the reduction of computational cost. A wide range of values for the thickness-to-length ratio and edge boundary conditions were analysed. The developed numerical model proved to overcome the shear locking phenomenon with success, revealing both reduced implementation effort and computational cost in comparison to the conventional FEM approach. The cell-based strain smoothing technique used in this work yields accurate results and generally attains higher convergence rate in energy at low computational cost

Mobile devices (e.g., smartphones, tablets) are becoming commonplace and thus, mobile performance marketing is nowadays witnessing a considerable growth. In this type of marketing, real-time bidding is typically implemented by using a Demand-Side Platform (DSP) that matches users to ads. If there is a product purchase (conversion), the DSP facilitates a monetization exchange by returning a percentage of the sale revenue to the publishers. Under this context, a critical DSP issue is the prediction of the user Conversion Rate (CVR), often modeled as a classification task and where the goal is to estimate if there will be a purchase when a user clicks on a dynamic link and then views an ad. The main objective of this study is the development of an Intelligent Decision Support System (IDSS), which can be integrated into an existing DSP. The IDSS is particularly focused on predicting the CVR, which can be used as a way to select the best advertisements for users (e.g., with the highest conversion probability). In this work, the IDSS was built using big data which in turn is generated from a DSP that operates at a global level. In a first phase, a stream processing engine was developed in order to obtain data samples from a complete set of events generated by DSP. This sample data included redirects and sales events collected between 2017 and 2019. Next, several Machine Learning (ML) methods, including Deep Learning (DL), balancing and pre-processing methods were explored. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed ML approach, which includes a pre-processing of Percentage Categorical Pruned (PCP) and a reuse learning of the Deep Feedfoward Network (DFFN) model, obtained the best predictions of CVR (for both binary and multi-class classification), requiring a computational effort that is manageable by DSP. Additionally, the IDSS developed, based on the proposed ML approach, proved to provide a valuable potential impact on the analyzed mobile marketing domain.

Hospitals are complex structures with the objective of providing quality, safe, reliable and efficient care to their patients. However, these organizations have been under pressure to reduce costs, improve operations and guarantee quality due to problems in flows such as waiting, cancellations, defects, absenteeism, increased demand, management failures and price increases. In this context, the pandemic caused by the new coronavirus (COVID-19) highlights some existing problems in health systems, and in particular in hospitals, units of study of this thesis, and establishes the growing need for evolution in hospital management. Thus, health managers have adopted management techniques from other industries in order to improve their operations, and thus, the area of Operations Management emerges as an important dimension for the management evolution of hospitals. Operations Management addresses topics such as managing production capacity, supply chains, planning and organizational quality, in addition to implementing improvement initiatives, such as Lean Healthcare. Lean Thinking originated in manufacturing with a focus on eliminating waste and continuously improving organizational flows and can be applied in healthcare operations. However, investigations that intersect such themes are still initial and punctual in their implementation in cases of improvement of hospital operations. Thus, this thesis is guided by a qualitative approach using techniques and methodologies such as workshops with health professionals, document analysis, interviews with experts and multiple case studies analyzing twenty projects in four large hospitals based in Portugal and Brazil. Through this research design, this work contributes to academia and hospital organizations through the development of a framework for managing hospital operations from the perspective of Lean Healthcare. In addition to adapting the main dimensions of Operations Management to the hospital environment, raising opportunities and best practices in the hospitals studied, and presenting tools, areas and guiding indicators for the systematic and integrated implementation of Operations Management and Lean Healthcare.

This paper focuses on criticality evaluation for supporting daily equipment maintenance management and the definition of medium and long-term maintenance actions to improve equipment and, therefore, productivity. These two different purposes led to the development of two different methods for criticality evaluation, using criteria adjusted for each case. The first method is based on rules for defining priorities for corrective and preventive maintenance tasks. Since a failure mode of critical equipment is not necessarily critical, priorities for maintenance tasks are assigned to tasks rather than to equipment. The second method uses Analytic Hierarchy Process to prioritize equipment based on its performance. This method is based on the indicators commonly monitored by maintenance departments. In addition to assessing equipment performance, it considers the maintenance effort made to achieve the evaluated performance. The selection of the criticality criteria and the development of the methods was based on literature review and triggered by a case study in a multinational automotive company. With the integration of the proposed methods in a computerized maintenance management system, maintenance technicians and managers are able to know in real time the tasks that should be performed first and to monitor the overall performance of equipment in the plant, focusing improvements where they are more required.

Project Portfolio Risk Management (PPRM) has been identified as a relevant area regarding project portfolio success. This paper reports on a structured literature review of PPRM. A structured search and selection process was carried out and conventional content analysis was conducted in the literature analysis of 62 papers published in international journals. PPRM has its theoretical and practical bases in the modem theory of portfolios, decision theory and risk management (RM). The content analysis reveals four main recurrent topics in PPRM: (1) The influence of RM on project portfolio success, based on project portfolio impact level, moderators or contingency factors between RM and project portfolio success, and PPRM dimensions; (2) risk and project interdependencies, highlighting resources, technology, outcome, value, and accomplishment project interdependencies; (3) project portfolio risk (PPR) identification, where four main risk source categories are identified; and (4) PPR assessment, composed of risk measures and the main methods used for risk assessment. Therefore, this study provides an overview of PPRM as a research field, while it also promotes four future research directions: (1) PPRM as part of organizational RM (2) RM, success dimensions and strategic impact; (3) mechanisms for PPR assessment, and (4) PPRM as a complex and dynamic system.

While stakeholders still have expectations concerning better prevention of injuries and diseases and the improvement of working conditions, it is suggested that new approaches are now necessary to ensure the effectiveness of an occupational safety and health management system. These approaches include the development of new methods that would facilitate the measurement of the proactive operational status of the occupational safety and health management system aimed at the genuine improvement of occupational safety and health practices. This study addresses the development of a tool that contains leading operational indicators in occupational safety and health, with the main objective of prioritizing these indicators according to the consensual opinion of groups of experts in the occupational safety and health field. The study included an identification of these indicators in the specialized literature, and with a short list of these indicators, a study was performed focused on the analysis of the main indicators that have proven to be applicable in companies. The Delphi method was applied to this manageable list to prioritize the indicators through three rounds, and a consensus was obtained on which indicators are most relevant, both for each individual group of experts and for all experts. This tool allows each company to customize the indicators that are most appropriate for its own reality by considering the report of these indicators. This tool can be a part of a safety dashboard model that is based on the balanced scorecard principle and considers only the most relevant indicators, that is, those resulting from a broad consensus among experts.

The search for natural products with important biological activities and low toxicity and costs is of great interest for the development of new formulations for biomedical applications. Natural products can be obtained from several nature sources. Specifically, oceans occupy more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and present a high level of biodiversity, making them a valuable target for looking for novel and promising compounds. For instance, fish roes are important fish products, owing to their high nutritional value and health benefits. Considering these features, this PhD work explored lipidic and aqueous extracts of fish roe, envisioning its potential as a source of promising molecules for biomedical applications. The species of fish used are common on the Portuguese mainland coast and of great economic importance, namely sardine, horse mackerel and sea bass. Methyl-tert-butyl ether (MTBE) extraction method was used to obtain lipid- and water-soluble compounds. The fatty acids analysis and the identification of the hydrophilic compounds were performed by chromatographic techniques coupled to a mass spectrometer. Lipidic and aqueous extracts of fish roe were used to generate liposomes, namely multilamellar vesicles (MLVs) and large unilamellar vesicles (LUVs) or fishroesomes. The physicochemical and in vitro biological parameters of the distinct developed formulations were assessed. Additionally, in vivo safety and efficacy of the formulations were evaluated. The presence of several fatty acids (e.g., ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acids – PUFA), as well as of numerous bioactive compounds (e.g., essential amino acids and gadusol) was demonstrated. Sardine roe-derived MLVs and LUVs were able to encapsulate and control the release of celecoxib. Relevant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of the developed formulations were reported at non-toxic levels for fibroblasts, macrophages and chondrocytes. Moreover, synergistic actions were observed for LUVs combined with aqueous extracts or encapsulating the anti-inflammatory drug. Finally, in vivo studies demonstrated the safety and enhanced therapeutic efficacy of the celecoxib-loaded fishroesomes. In conclusion, these novel liposomes may enhance the drugs therapeutic index and exhibit bioactivity per se. Thus, they have potential to be applied in the biomedical field, particularly as a natural alternative for the treatment of inflammatory conditions.

The motivation for this study was to measure the impact that Twitter publications have on voting and the choosing of winners. To this end, an experimental study was carried out based on a set of data collected from tweets (published on Twitter) related to the reality show “Big Brother - A Revolução”, broadcast on a television station in Portugal, TVI. The procedure adopted for conducting the experiment consisted of creating a completely self-contained service, built from scratch for this project, and the correspondent implementation, in order to allow the collection, storage, cleaning, pre-processing and analysis of as many tweets as possible, as long as they are associated with the program. A tool to analyze the polarity (positive, negative or neutral) of the sentiment was implemented and applied to the phrase (or phrases) contained in the tweet and stored in a database. Then, running in the database, the tweets were divided according to how they referred to one or more competitors. Throughout the time that the reality show existed, the results of this experiment were public presented in daily/weekly summaries and posted on Twitter through a “Twitter bot”.
