مستخلص: This article reports the results from an exploratory study of seed libraries. Based on interviews with librarians working on seed library projects in their institutions, this study investigated why such libraries have been created, what processes and resources are required for their establishment and continued sustainability, how they function, what populations they serve, how their activities relate to more traditional library processes and functions, and how seed libraries offer a novel way for public libraries to engage with and serve the local community. Seed libraries provide an innovative mechanism for community service that is closely aligned with many of the traditional core values of public librarianship, including facilitating access, equity, lifelong learning, social justice, preservation and heritage, and community engagement. مستخلص: A cultural divide has been demonstrated in the United Kingdom, with disadvantaged individuals and communities known to be least likely to participate in cultural activities. Recognizing that low levels of cultural capital can present multiple barriers to cultural participation and that public libraries have an important cultural role in supporting and promoting learning and development, this article examines issues of cultural divide through the theoretical lens of cultural capital. Through analysis of examples of public library good practice in the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States, this article addresses an understudied topic and advances our understanding of the sociocultural role of public libraries in stimulating cultural consumption, participation, and engagement in disadvantaged communities. The article also calls for further empirical research to support and operationalize cultural capital concepts in library practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: This article focuses on public library-community relationships in Brazil. Initially, we take into account the international information science literature highlighting the contemporary relevance of public library-community relations. We also consider aspects of the Brazilian historical and political experience and previous research indicating that public libraries in the country have not been valued by public policies and that, although present in more than 5,000 municipalities, these institutions tend to remain invisible to their communities. The main empirical contribution of our article lies in the analysis of interviews collected from Brazilian intellectuals and researchers who hold or have held prominent positions in institutions that define policies or carry out research on Brazilian public libraries. These interviews reveal a strong consciousness of the need to strengthen library-community relations, suggesting several actions, both from the library to the community and from the community to the library. The Corona crisis has far-reaching consequences for the provision of local public services throughout Europe. This particularly applies to voluntary services within the cultural sector, which contribute to educational justice beyond formal education. Despite the easing up of lockup measures from May 2020, public libraries remained closed and had to adapt their services and develop new formats. The article analyses the current developments in Germany and Europe and highlights the consequences for educational justice at the local level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: Studies of the creation of social trust and social capital indicate that informal social contact has a positive effect. Some studies find that uncorrupt public institutions have positive effects on trust and social capital. Additionally, a number of papers show that public libraries have a similar effect. The mechanisms that generate trust, however, remain largely unspecified. Therefore, research describing micro-level processes is needed to uncover the mechanisms creating trust. This article reports a study of change in social trust among first-generation Mexican immigrants who participated in English as a second language ðESLÞ classes, computer classes, and civics classes in six US public libraries. These students displayed little trust outside their family and friends; however, after participating in library programs, they became more trusting of the library, the librarians, their fellow students, and other library users. These effects can be considered a starting point for a spiral of increasing generalized trust among the students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: Public libraries are on the frontline of serving underprivileged groups like racialized youth and help them to mitigate social inequities that manifest in negative outcomes like education gaps, underemployment and access to safe and affordable housing. Although racialized youth account for half of the youth population in Canadian cities like Toronto, their experience in public libraries is an unstudied area of Canadian LIS scholarly and professional research. Existing research approaches youth as a homogenous group in terms of age and biological stages and does not account for race, class, and urbanism. However, racialized youth face different challenges in which race and systemic racism are a facet of everyday life. This work aims to reverse racial neutrality in public libraries by demonstrating how ambivalence about race perpetuates systemic inequalities and the disengagement of racialized youth. It draws on interdisciplinary research to show how the race-blind approach is not reflective of the needs of communities being served. Using a Critical Race Theory (CRT) framework, it shows that public libraries can implement processes to gather race-specific data under the recently-implemented Anti-Racism Act (2017). This will provide a contextual understanding of the racial make-up of users and provide a valuable frame of reference to support efforts to build stronger and more effective relationships. مستخلص: The pervasive, personal crisis of intimate partner violence (IPV) demands community information resources in workforce, health care, mental health, public housing, criminal justice, and social service arenas. Although generally underutilized, public libraries have a pivotal role to play as the only public institution specifically structured to support community information access. In order to provide effective service, however, librarians must understand the information complexities of the IPV context. This study triangulates two populations and two data-gathering techniques in an effort to provide a deeper understanding of survivors' information needs. The first segment analyzes the information issues of IPV survivors in an active bulletin board (BB) community; the second segment utilizes in-depth interviews with fifty-seven individuals (safe-house staff, survivors, and police officers) in ten Texas cities. The information experiences were analyzed in the context of public library service and in light of everyday life information seeking (ELIS) theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: Culture as defined by Tylor is that complex whole including beliefs, art, region, values, norms, ideas, law, taught, knowledge, custom and other capabilities acquired by a man as a member of a society. Culture is the totality of human experience acquired during transmission of heritage from one generation to another and to learn the ways of learning, eating, drinking, behaving, walking, dressing, and working etc. The culture of Bengal encompasses the Bengal region in south Asia, mainly including Bangladesh and the Indian states of West Bengal, Tripura and Assam (Barak Valley), where the Bengali language is the official and primary language. Nineteenth-century (mainly the period of Raja Ram Mohan Roy to Rabindranath Tagore) having a great concentration of scholars, social and religious reformers, scientists, literary giants, patriotic orators etc. brought renaissance in Bengal and transform it from the 'medieval' to the 'modern'. Social reformers established many libraries as community learning space started with The Calcutta Public Library, in the year 1836, the first modern public library in South Asia. From that era role of public library and its purpose of use have changed time to time. A brief description has given about the public library movement and the changes of public library use in the cultural context of present West Bengal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
