الوصف: This article makes public an extremely important document of the first (according to the will of Holy Patriarch Tikhon) candidate for the position of the Patriarchal Locum Tenens Hieromartyr Metropolitan Kirill (Smirnov). It was written in April 1934 and summarised his understanding of the current state of aff airs in the church together with possible ways of overcoming the situation created by the policy of Patriarchal Locum Tenens Sergiy (Stragorodsky). Hieromartyr Kirill was firmly committed to the legacy of the Council of 1917–1918 and to the Patriarchal Administration established by the Council. The most important canonical acts which, in his opinion, should have been used in the current circumstances, were the Resolution of the Supreme Church Administration under Patriarch Tikhon of November 20, 1920 and the Patriarchal testamentary decree of January 7, 1925. Metropolitan Kirill’s associate was Hieromartyr Bishop Damaskin (Tsedik). He convincingly supported their position using the letters of the Patriarchal Locum Tenens Metropolitan Petr (Polyansky) of 1929–1930. These clearly showed that Metropolitan Sergiy signifi cantly exceeded his authority and appropriated rights that he had not been endowed with. The publication also includes a document most likely compiled by Bishop Damaskin, based on the opinions of Metropolitans Kirill and Petr. Both documents are cited according to the same source, i.e. the notebook of Bishop Damaskin, seized from him during his arrest in 1934, and now kept in Jordanville, the spiritual center of the Russian Church Abroad.

الوصف: Conciliarity is central to the identity of the Christian church. This article discusses the meaning of the word ‘conciliarity’ and its relation to ‘synodality’ through the lens of the church’s experience of councils (synods) at the local, regional, and universal levels. It offers ten scriptural ‘roots’ for the experience of councils and conciliarity in the church. It describes the church’s experience of councils and conciliarity in the pre-Nicene era, at the Council of Nicaea (325), and up to the rupture in communion between East and West (1054). There is a brief analysis, drawn from the church’s experience in the first millennium, of the conditions for the recognition of a council as ‘ecumenical’. The trajectory of the general councils of the Western church, convened by the Pope, is then followed through to the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965) highlighting debates around conciliarism and the contemporary Roman Catholic understanding of conciliarity. The article then turns to a discussion of councils and conciliarity as understood in Eastern Orthodoxy, the churches of the Reformation, and the Anglican Communion. A section on the World Council of Churches shows how ‘conciliar fellowship’ is central to its understanding of its own identity. A concluding section on ‘conciliarity, conversation and consensus’ returns to the model of the disciples on the road to Emmaus as central to an ecumenical understanding of the conciliarity of the church.

الوصف: The article discusses how the ideas of the Italian Renaissance influenced the philosophical views of St. Maximus the Greek, and how they are reflected in his works. The object of this article is the philosophical views of Maxim the Greek, translator and religious figure in Rus' in the 16th century. On the basis of the analysis of his works, a picture of his philosophical views is drawn up. The study of the philosopher's ideas is carried out in the context of the religious and cultural situation of Rus' in the 16th century. The duality of the views of Maxim the Greek on the ideas of humanism through the analysis of his texts is noted. It is shown how through his teachings it is possible to trace both the influence of ancient philosophy and Christian content. The texts touching upon the idea of humanism are analyzed, and how the works of Savonarola and Giovanni Pico della Mirandola influenced this. The influence that he had on the cultural life of Rus' in the first half of the 16th century is considered. Particular attention is paid to the ideas of non-possessors, and how Maxim the Greek influenced this teaching. The relevance of these texts in the context of the study of Russian philosophy is noted.

الوصف: The article discusses the question of the relationship of the Protestant theologian Karl Barth towards Roman Catholicism. It focuses on the period of Barth’s occupation as a part-time professor at the Department of Reformed Theology at the University of Göttingen. It is a formative period both for Barth’s theology as a whole, as well as for his relationship towards Roman Catholicism. The article presents the genesis of Barth’s interest in Roman Catholicism by placing it in the context of his dealing with Protestant theology itself and its history, or pre-history in the theology of the Middle Ages. The article shows how Barth’s attitude towards Roman Catholicism changed – from understanding Roman Catholicism as a kind of “heresy” similar to New Protestantism, to understanding Roman Catholicism as a form of theology and ecclesiastics whose, although problematic understanding of the possibility of the Word of God in the discourse of the Church, can become a critical stimulus to Protestant theology and ecclesiastics in search for its partially obscure identity.

الوصف: "Christopher W. B. Stephens focuses on canon law as the starting point for a new interpretation of divisions between East and West in the Church after the death of Constantine the Great. He challenges the common assumption that bishops split between "Nicenes" and "non-Nicenes," "Arians" or "Eusebians." Instead, he argues that questions of doctrine took second place to disputes about the status of individual bishops and broader issues of the role of ecclesiastical councils, the nature of episcopal authority, and in particular the supremacy of the bishop of Rome. Canon law allows the author to offer a fresh understanding of the purposes of councils in the East after 337, particularly the famed Dedication Council of 341 and the western meeting of the council of Serdica and the canon law written there, which elevated the bishop of Rome to an authority above all other bishops. Investigating the laws they wrote, the author describes the power struggles taking place in the years following 337 as bishops sought to elevate their status and grasp the opportunity for the absolute form of leadership Constantine had embodied. Combining a close study of the laws and events of this period with broader reflections on the nature of power and authority in the Church and the increasingly important role of canon law, the book offers a fresh narrative of one of the most significant periods in the development of the Church as an institution and of the bishop as a leader." --
