الوصف: This study aims to test a dichotomous scale for measuring children’s material values. Research into childhood consumer behaviour has taken a keen interest into the materialism values of children. Studies have sought to understand how materialism develops in children, the material values that children hold and the effects of materialism on children’s well-being. Other studies have sought to investigate the ways in which childhood materialism can be measured. Many of the studies investing children’s materialism have adopted the Material Values Scale for children (MVS-c), which is in a Likert scale format. However, studies on child consumers have shown that younger children struggle to express their attitudes using Likert type questions. This research examines the material values of tween consumers using an adapted Material Values Scale. The aim of the study was to assess the validity and reliability of a dichotomised version of the MVS-c. The dichotomised scale was generated by collapsing the four response categories into a binary response scale. This methodological study uses a 12-item, yes/no response instrument to obtain data from 192 school children. The data was subjected to factor analysis, Kuder-Richardson (KR) 20, item total correlation and structural equation modelling. Factor loadings for the items varied between 0.24 and 0.69, with an acceptable KR-20 value of 0.708 for the scale. While the study confirmed the second-order material values structure, the weak factor loadings, compared to those obtained using Likert scales, suggest that dichotomous questions are not the most reliable for measuring children’s material values. The findings of this study have implications for research with children.

الوصف: Background: Materialism is an attitude that considers material goods to be central in life. Nowadays, adolescents appear to have a high level of materialism, which is related to risky behaviors. Nevertheless, there is a lack of measurement tools with adequate psychometric properties to assess materialism in this age group. For this reason, two studies were conducted to investigate the psychometric properties of the original and short Material Values Scale (MVS) in adolescents. Methods: In Study 1, participants were randomly split into two subsamples to compare psychometric properties of the original version of MVS with those of the short one. The first subsample consisted of 1054 adolescents (58% male; Mage = 16.34; SD = 1.15), and the second one of 1058 adolescents (57% male; Mage = 16.26; SD = 1.04). In Study 2, the psychometric properties of a revised version of the short MVS (without item 8) were investigated to confirm its adequacy with a new sample composed of 1896 adolescents (60% male; Mage = 16.40; SD = 2.76). Results: Results of Study 1 showed that the short version appeared to be a better measuring tool with respect to the long form to investigate materialism in adolescents. Nevertheless, problems with item 8 emerged. Results of Study 2 attested to the adequacy of the psychometric properties of the revised version of the short MVS (by excluding item 8) in this age group, in terms of dimensionality, reliability, and validity. Conclusions: Findings show that the revised short version of the MVS could be a valid and reliable tool for measuring the multidimensional construct of materialism in Italian adolescents.

الوصف: Abstract Background Materialism indicates the extent to which an individual’s life is focused on consumerism, or the acquisition of money and possessions. The Material Values Scale (MVS), comprising the factors “success,” “centrality,” and “happiness,” is a well-known rating scale for materialism. However, a Japanese version of the materialism scale has not yet been established, and the details of the factors and effects related to materialism have not yet been clarified in Japan. The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate the Japanese version of the MVS (J-MVS). Methods We developed the translated J-MVS using a back-translation process. To validate and evaluate the scale based on an online survey, we recruited 500 people, with 100 participants (50 men, 50 women) in five age groups, from 20 to 69 years. We compared and evaluated several factor structure models based on exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. To evaluate the external criterion-referenced validity of the developed J-MVS scale, we examined the relationship between age, personality, and well-being, which have shown stable relationships with materialism in previous studies. Results We developed two six-item dual-factor models. Both models showed significant positive correlations with social comparison orientation and neuroticism, and had significant negative correlations with various subjective well-being indices, suggesting sufficient external criterion-referenced validity. The J-MVS comprising six positive-worded items (J-MVS-P6; without any reverse-worded items) showed a higher correlation with other indicators than the version comprising six items representing all item types and was considered to have higher external criterion-referenced validity. Conclusions We propose the J-MVS-P6 for use as a materialism scale in Japan. Compared with the findings from other countries, materialism in Japan may be more closely related to subjective well-being. This scale may be used to examine the effectiveness of various intervention methods for improving individuals’ happiness, based on changes in factors closely related to materialism in Japan.
