الوصف: In the present work, and for the first time, totally biosourced low-density particleboards were produced using cardoon particles (a no added value by-product from the Portuguese cheese making industry), bound with a potato starch adhesive. Different starch/cardoon ratios (0.6, 0.8, 1 and 1.2) were tested and the effect of different bio-based additives (chitosan, wood fiber and glycerol) on the performance of the adhesive system was evaluated. The best result was obtained for a formulation with a starch/cardoon mass ratio of 0.8, a chitosan/starch mass ratio of 0.05 and a water/starch mass ratio of 1.75. The particleboards produced had a density of 323 kg·m−3, internal bond strength of 0.35 N·mm−2 and thickness swelling of 15.2%. The values of density and internal bond strength meet the standard requirements of general-purpose lightweight boards for use in dry conditions according to CEN/TS 16368 specification. Moreover, the susceptibility of the formulations with best results was established against subterranean termites and one decay fungi.

الوصف: Starch-based adhesive was prepared from corn starch and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as raw materials by acid hydrolysis with HCl. The starch was hydrolyzed with different amounts of HCl and characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and thermal gravimetric analysis. The results indicated that different amounts of HCl affected hydrogen bonds, the amount of free hydroxyl groups, crystalline structure, compatibility between starch and PVA, thermal stability, and bond strength. The crystallinity decreased by 13.7% when the amount of acid was 33% compared with untreated starch. The bond strength reached its maximum of 1.35 MPa when the acid content was 23%. The initial decomposition temperature of starch decreased after acid hydrolysis. It was also noted that corrosion of the starch surface increased with increasing acid content.

الوصف: Unmodified kraft lignin was used to create a starch-based adhesive via the Stein Hall process. Lignin up to 35 wt% was used in several formulations. Lignin was incorporated in both the carrier and slurry portions of the formulations and the effect on adhesive strength and water resistance was studied. The addition of lignin resulted in a significant increase in adhesive strength when the lignin was added solely to the slurry portion. When lignin was added solely to the carrier portion, the adhesive strength decreased. Other formulations, where lignin was present in both the carrier and slurry portions, showed moderate increases in adhesive strength. Finally, the addition of lignin increased the water-resistance of the adhesive bond in the paperboard.

الوصف: Miscanthus lutarioriparius(M. lutarioriparius) in Lake Dongting District are in the situation of being discarded due to the government’s environmental policy, the decomposition of which will bring another pollution risk. The purpose of this study is to environmentally analyze the production of M. lutarioriparius-based oriented strand particleboards(M.OSB) as alternatives to the conventional artificial boards. The production systems were evaluated from a cradle-to-gate perspective using the Life Cycle Assessment(LCA)methodology. Our results showed that the M.OSB had an overall better profile than wood panels, identifying the production of starch adhesives and bio-fuels as the main environmental hotspots. It was also found that annual harvesting and utilization of M. lutarioripariuscould ease the burden to the environment during the decomposition of this plant, and further improve the environmental performance of M.OSB. Sensitivity analyses were conducted on the key parameters, suggesting that there are opportunities for improvement. This study provides useful information for enterprises and policymakers on where to focus their activities, with the aim of making the future of M. lutarioriparius utilization more technically and environmentally favourable.
