Relation: R obert M aniura is senior lecturer in the history of art at Birkbeck College, University of London. He is the author of Pilgrimage to Images in the Fifteenth Century: The Origins of the Cult of Our Lady of Częstochowa (2004)and coeditor of Presence: The Inherence of the Prototype within Images and Other Objects (2000). His current project explores the role of images in the religious culture of Renaissance Italy. The research for this paper was undertaken during a fellowship at Villa I Tatti, the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies, and written with the support of a Leverhulme Research Fellowship. All translations of Giuliano di Francesco Guizzelmi's works cited in this essay are my own.
