مستخلص: I describe a culture of email discussion that has developed at The Robert Darbishire Practice, which enables busy clinicians, especially when working less than full time clinically, to discuss cases and other issues with colleagues. Examples of email discussions were collected prospectively and informally analysed, and could be categorised into a typology of 10 areas of discourse. Email discussion appeared to facilitate collaborative learning, leading to changes in knowledge and practice, with potential improvements to patient care. In particular, email discussion created the groundwork for developing formal practice policies and procedures at a later stage. Electronic discussion appeared to take off in our group of clinicians (and other colleagues) who work together and thus share tacit knowledge about our practice and trust in each other, despite not having a discussion moderator (facilitator) or any rules about what or how to engage in discussion.
