Mexico is worldwide recognized by the extraordinary caves found in its territory. Most of these caves are in the central and southern part of the country; however, the northwest states are seen as non-favorable sites for significant discoveries, Sonora among them, considered desert ecosystem zone. Nevertheless, the history of speleology in this state began in 1920 with the location of several bat shelters, findings that motivated a more exhaustive search of these enclosures. One of the most significant findings was El Tigre cave, visited since 1962 for researchers and interested groups due to the large number of bats inhabiting it. After decades of rare and ephemeral studies in Sonora's caves, a gathering of interested people comes to the explorations back in 2012, to formalize in 2016 the creation of the first speleology group in the State, known as Grupo Pionero Espeleológico de Sonora (G-PES). México es reconocido a nivel internacional por las extraordinarias cavidades que se encuentran en su territorio. La mayoría de estas cuevas se encuentran en la parte central y meridional del país, mientras que los estados del noroeste han sido vistos como sitios no favorables para descubrimientos significativos, Sonora entre ellos por ser considerado una zona desértica. Sin embargo, la historia de la espeleología en este estado comienza a partir de 1920, con la localización de diversos refugios de murciélagos, hallazgos que motivaron una búsqueda más exhaustiva de estos recintos. Uno de los descubrimientos más importantes fue la cueva El Tigre, visitada desde 1962 por distintos grupos e investigadores debido a gran la cantidad de murciélagos que la habitan. Después de décadas de escasos y efímeros estudios en las cavidades sonorenses, un grupo de interesados retoma las exploraciones en el 2012, formalizando en el 2016 la creación del primer grupo de espeleología del estado, el Grupo Pionero Espeleológico de Sonora (G-PES).
