Community participation in decision-making constitutes an important challenge for the management of community tourism. This article aims to contribute to the understanding of community participation in ecotourism decision-making, providing a tool for studying and conducting the decision-making process in communities. A community strategic planning model is designed and applied to measure the degree of involvement of local residents in three types of decision and the performance of a set of factors considered key for active participation. The research uses a mixed approach to compare and explain the differences between two local cooperatives on the coast of the state of Nayarit, located in the west of Mexico. The result of a structured survey shows statistically significant differences in the involvement of partners in decisions, as well as in the factors that favor their participation; in-depth interviews with partners and external informants, documentary review and non-participant observation -as part of the qualitative techniques-help to explain these differences. Finally, positive bivariate correlations obtained between the variables under study and a multiple correlation coefficient of 0.80 allow us to conclude that the degree of local participation in the entire decision-making process can be explained by the interaction of seven factors analyzed, of which Learning Spaces and Leadership have the greatest impact. La participación de la comunidad en la toma de decisiones constituye un reto importante para la gestión del turismo comunitario. Este artículo tiene por objetivo contribuir a la comprensión de la participación comunitaria en la toma de decisiones del ecoturismo, aportando una herramienta para el estudio y la conducción del proceso decisorio en las comunidades. Se diseña y aplica un modelo de planeación estratégica comunitaria para medir el grado de involucramiento de los residentes locales en tres tipos de decisión y el desempeño de un conjunto de factores considerados claves para la participación activa. La investigación emplea un enfoque mixto para comparar y explicar las diferencias entre dos cooperativas locales de la costa del estado de Nayarit, ubicado en el occidente de México. El resultado de una encuesta estructurada arroja diferencias estadísticamente significativas en el involucramiento de los socios en las decisiones, así como en los factores que favorecen su participación; entrevistas en profundidad a socios e informantes externos, revisión documental y observación no participante -como parte de las técnicas cualitativas- ayudan a explicar estas diferencias. Finalmente, correlaciones bivariadas positivas obtenidas entre las variables bajo estudio y un coeficiente de correlación múltiple de 0.80 permiten concluir que el grado de participación local en todo el proceso decisorio puede explicarse por la interacción de siete factores analizados, entre los cuales Espacios de Aprendizaje y Liderazgo poseen el mayor impacto.
