Ibn Abi Dawud was accused of two charges, the first being his father’s denial of him, and the second being his appointment of Ali, _peace be upon him_. The scholars of Al-Jarh and Al-Ta’deel have refuted these two accusations in such a way that he does not slander the man’s bonds, accepting his narrators and arguing with them. The story and other things that passed, Al-Hakim Abu Ahmad, Al-Daraqutni, Ibn Al-Muzaffar, Ibn Shaheen, Abd Al-Baqi bin Qana’, Hafiz Al-Hanafiyyah, and Abu Bakr bin Mujahid Al-Maqri narrated from him, and they are not counted. In AlAmsaar...)) the praises of Abi Al-Sheikh and Abi Naim were also presented, and Al-Salami mentioned that he asked Al-Daraqutni about him? أتهم ابن أبي داود بتهمتين الأولى تكذيب أبيه له والثانية نصبه لعلي _عليه السلام_ وقد رد علماء الجرح والتعديل تلك التهمتين بحيث لا يقدح في وثاقه الرجل وقبول روايته والاحتجاج بها، أطبق أهل العلم على السماع عن ابن أبي داود وتوثيقه والاحتجاج به ولم يبق معنى للطعن فيه بتلك الحكاية وغيرها مما مرّ ، فروى عنه الحاكم أبو أحمد والدارقطني وابن المظفر وابن شاهين وعبد الباقي بن قانع حافظ الحنفية وأبو بكر بن مجاهد المقري ، وخلق لا يحصون، وتقدم قول بي الفضل صالح بن أحمد التميمي الهمذاني الحافظ فيه: (( إمام العراق وعلم العلم في الأمصار (...) وتقدم أيضاً ثناء أبي الشيخ وأبي نعيم، وذكر السلمي أنه سأل الدارقطني عنه؟ فقال: (( ثقة إلا ... تقدم )) و قال محمد بن عبد الله بن الشخير: كان زاهداً ناسكاً.
