The characterisation of the old woman, graus, begins already in Archaic poetry and reveals particular traits that are gradually developed in the later literary production. This figure finds a great success in comedy, from archaia to nea, where the graus generally has a major role in narrative plots of the plays. My paper reconstructs the elements specific of this character. The study will also show how they serve to outline the profile of a particular old woman: the mastropos, advanced in years, who lures young maidens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
