Palliative care was established as the fifth pillar of the German Society for Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine e. V. (DGAI). However, which role anaesthetists may play regarding the care of patients with palliative care needs, is not clear yet. Method An ad hoc email survey among members of the scientific working group "palliative medicine" of the Association of German Anaesthetists e.V. (BDA) and DGAI on Aug. 22, 2022, about the role of anaesthesiology in palliative medicine. The response to the single question "Is there a matter close to your heart that in your view should be mentioned here?" were analysed qualitatively according to Mayring [1]. Results Eleven of 39 registered addressees re-sponded. The three main categories were (1) self-perception of the professional task regarding palliative care (2) palliative care qualifications or palliative care training and continuing education, and (3) the effectiveness of anaesthesiology activities with regard to palliative care. Numerous aspects of anaesthesiological competence concerning palliative care were reported. The need for further training and qualification of anaesthesiologists as well as the creation of necessary political structures were pointed out. Conclusion Future initiatives should include specific recommendations on the role of anaesthesiologists concerning palliative care in everyday clinical practice and interdisciplinary collaboration. Die Palliativmedizin wurde als fünfte Säule der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Anästhesiologie und Intensivmedizin e. V. (DGAI) etabliert. Welche Rolle Anästhesistinnen im Hinblick auf die Versorgung von Patientinnen mit palliativmedizinischem Bedarf haben, ist jedoch bislang nicht klar. Methode Ad-hoc-Umfrage unter Mitgliedern des gemeinsamen wissenschaftlichen Arbeitskreises Palliativmedizin des Berufsverbands Deutscher Anästhesisten e. V. (BDA) und der DGAI per E-Mail am 22.08.2022 zur Rolle der Anästhesiologie in der Palliativmedizin. Die Rückmeldungen auf die einzige Frage „Gibt es eine Herzensangelegenheit, die Ihrer Ansicht nach hier unbedingt genannt werden sollte?“ wurden qualitativ nach Mayring [1] analysiert. Ergebnisse Es antworteten 11 von 39 registrierten Adressat:innen. Die drei Hauptkategorien waren (1) Selbstverständnis der berufl ichen Aufgabe im Hinblick auf Palliativmedizin, (2) palliativmedizinische Qualifikation bzw. palliativmedizinische Aus- und Weiterbildung und (3) Wirksamkeit anästhesiologischer Tätigkeit mit Blick auf die Palliativmedizin. Es wurden zahlreiche Aspekte anästhesiologischer Kompetenz hinsichtlich Palliativmedizin berichtet. Auf Weiterbildungs- und Qualifizierungsbedarf von Anästhesist:innen sowie das Schaffen notwendiger politischer Strukturen wurde hingewiesen. Schlussfolgerung Zukünftige Initiativen sollten konkrete Empfehlungen zur Rolle von Anästhesiolog:innen im Hinblick auf die Palliativmedizin im klinischen Alltag sowie in der interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit beinhalten.
