The article "Constitutional Principles for the Further Development of the European Union" by Koen Lenaerts deals with the constitutional foundations and values of the European Union (EU). The EU is based on common values such as democracy, freedom, equality, the rule of law, and solidarity. The article emphasizes the importance of a broad discussion on the future direction of the EU and highlights the role of EU law and the previous case law of the European Court of Justice. Die EU ist nicht darauf ausgerichtet, eines Tages ein Bundesstaat zu werden, vielmehr bleibt Platz für politische Entwicklungen und das demokratische Spiel. Dabei sind jedoch die verfassungsrechtlichen Vorgaben zu beachten, die in den Verträgen enthalten sind und gegebenenfalls vom EuGH konkretisiert wurden.
