The author considers comments concerning the articles "State of the Finance Field," by J. Fred Weston and "State of the Finance Field: Comment," by Harry Sauvain, both in the December 1967 issue of this publication, about the changing state of the field of finance. The author states that the differences between traditional finance and new finance lies with the effectiveness with which quantitative methods are used, and suggests that new finance appears more interested in mathematical games than solving genuine problems. He mentions three reasons to expect very large errors in short-term corporate basic yields: the shortage of quotations, the question of commissions, and the sensitivity of short-term yields to minor price changes. |
