Can you talk about your unconventional path to teaching about Ming literature and history? I was fascinated by this dramatic and sentimental Ming packaging of women's virtue, and the way it provided a new commodity for mid-Ming booksellers, so I began writing articles on the social uses of women's virtue in the Ming. The Ming separated two conquest dynasties, the Mongol Yuan and the Manchu Qing, which in itself makes the Ming a significant period to study (what did Ming take from the Yuan, what did it bequeath to the Qing?).
