The article reports that in 1998 St. John's University, the Roman Catholic university in Queens, New York, best known for its law school and basketball team, fielded 7,500 applicants for its incoming freshman class. By 2005, that number had nearly tripled to 20,500. Sister school Fordham University has had an almost fourfold increase in enrollment since the early 1990s. Catholic institutions here have their crosses to bear. While they have broadened their student bodies, they continue to serve large numbers of immigrants and first-generation Americans whose financial needs are great. |
