مستخلص: Leptospirosis is the most widespread zoonosis in the world and is considered an emerging infectious disease. However, its nonspecific clinical presentation and the complexities of existing laboratory testing make diagnosis difficult. Isolation of leptospires from clinical specimens is not routinely available in clinical laboratories and demonstration of seroconversion in paired sera results in delayed diagnosis. Availability of rapid and sensitive assays for diagnosis early in the clinical illness would be a significant advance. We report the first detection of pathogenic leptospiral DNA by real-time polymerase chain reaction in the serum of a patient with acute Weil disease.
