الوصف: Convulsions with fever (CWF) are rare after 5 years of age. The authors describe the conditions of 92 children aged 6-14 years with acute CWF recruited from the Childrens Emergency Room of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital over a 1-year period in Benin City Nigeria. This area of southern Nigeria is holoendemic for malaria. 49% had malaria parasitaemia 15% bacterial meningitis 8% focal extracranial infections 1% bacteraemia and 27% acute fever of undetermined origin. The prevalence of meningitis increased with the presence of temperature greater than or equal to 40 degrees Centigrade focal seizures and rousable coma. The authors conclude that while bacterial meningitis is an important illness in school-age children with CWF malaria parasitaemia is the most common infection.
