ملاحظة: This large photographic collection is of staff members who worked in the Biomedical Division of the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation from 1950-1993. The collection includes both black and white and color photographs. Most of the individuals in the photographs are identified.
The Biomedical Division at the Noble Foundation was created by the Trustees in early 1952 but grew out of a predecessor service called "Laboratory Services". The Trustees appointed Thomas A. McCoy, Ph. D., as the first Director. The Foundation's Biomedical Division focused on medical research with specific teams doing specific research tasks. For example, Dr. Ralph F. Kampschmidt was head of the Tumor Host Section from 1955-1985, Dr. David Ringer was Head of Biochemical Pharmacology from 1985-1993, Dr. Richard W. Leu was Head of the Immunology Section from 1975-1993, Dr. Robert T. Dell'Orco was Head of the Cell Biology Section from 1973-1993, and Dr. Donald E. Kizer was Head of the Carcinogenesis Section from 1954-1985. The Foundation's Biomedical Division pioneered work on L-Asparaginase and Interleukin I. In 1992 a decision was made to close the Biomedical Division and to relocate it and incorporate it as part of the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation in Oklahoma City. This move was accomplished in 1993. In the 42 years (1951-1993) of its existence, the Biomedical Division had 3 directors: Thomas A. McCoy, Ph. D., 1952-1965; Paul F. Kruse, 1965-1973; Manford K. Patterson, 1973-1993. The last director, Manford K. Patterson, Ph. D., was a native of Ardmore, Oklahoma. Dr. Patterson was first hired as a summer employee in June 1948. In June 1954 he received his Master's Degree in Biochemistry from the University of Oklahoma. He earned his Ph. D. in Biochemistry in 1961 from Vanderbilt University. Upon the sudden death of Dr. Paul Kruse in 1973 from a heart attack, Dr. Patterson who was then Head of the Nutrition Section of the Biomedical Division was promoted to become the Director of the Biomedical Division. After many year of successful operation, the decision was made in 1992 to close the Biomedical Division and transfer it to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation in Oklahoma City. When the transfer was complete in 1993, Dr. Patterson chose to retire. As of January 2004, Dr. Patterson along with his wife lived in Oklahoma City.
