Henry Plummer was born in 1832 in New England. He traveled west in 1852. In 1856 Plummer became marshal of Nevada City, Calif. Due to legal problems of his own, Plummer moved to Oregon and then Washington, before arriving in Bannack, Montana Territory, in 1862. He described himself as a vigilante from Lewiston, Idaho, and was quickly elected sheriff. According to the generally accepted story, however, Plummer was actually head of an outlaw gang in Bannack and Virginia City. Plummer was hanged by the vigilantes on 10 Jan. 1864. |
