The city of Alguer was conquered in 1354 by Peter IV of Aragon, who intended to colonise the city with subjects loyal to the Crown. During the war between the kingdom of Sardinia and the Judicature of Arborea, Cagliari and Alghero became the only two Catalan-Aragonese enclaves on the island and, hence, border territories. Despite all, some elements of Sardinian culture were introduced into the Sardinian-Catalan city. In addition, the great plague at the end of the sixteenth century accelerated the immigration of Sardinians to Alghero territory where, despite the ethnic interchange, no linguistic substitution occurred. As far as genres of popular literature are concerned, three elements functioned as conservative factors: the Church, the Municipality and the community. To the contrary, family tradition served as a shelter to popular Sardinian folklore which flared up intensively and became a renewing force. |
