In the course of the restoration of the altar piece located in the apse of Oviedo's cathedral, an epitaph was discovered in the fourteenth century wall, related with the bishop Virmundo (†991), whose tomb had become the centre of a local cult. In this paper we will attempt to answer several questions concerning the figure of bishop Virmundo, his place of burial and the development of his local cult.
