This article seeks to answer the following research problem: How was this control of pastimes manifested in U.S. colonial laws? The present research investigated laws that dealt with this issue, both in England and in a markedly Protestant American colony, Pennsylvania, from 1633 to 1682. From the analysis of these laws, it was observed that Protestants who came to the English colonies used their religious freedom to create a regulated control of their free time, based on a morality that overestimated faith and work. This would result in restrictive behavior regarding amusements, as they became unwelcome practices to the ethos formed there.
