| الوصف: | L’Énéide propose deux définitions de l’externus dux que l’Italie doit se donner selon une prédiction du vieil haruspice (VIII, 499-503) : l’une fait appel à la notion de consanguinité ethnique, la seconde se fonde uniquement sur des critères politiques. À travers l’opposition dramatiquement mise en scène entre ces deux points de vue, c’est aux débats quant à la définition de l’Italie au début de l’époque augustéenne que Virgile nous donne accès. L’étude de la reprise de ces deux mêmes thèmes, opposés dans deux discours officiels sous Tibère (discussion pour l’attribution du temple de Tibère et Livie dans la province d’Asie), et sous Claude (Table claudienne) montre comment évolua l’idéologie augustéenne en la matière dans les premières années de l’Empire. The Aeneid defines in two different ways the externus dux, whom Italy is supposed to adopt according to the prediction of the old haruspex (VIII, 499-503): the first one resorts to the notion of ethnical consanguinitas, the second one is based only on political criteria. The opposition between those two concepts, dramatically described for in the poem, sheds light on Augustean controversies pertaining to the definition of Italy. Moreover, both of these definitions are to be found in two official discourses dating one from the reign of Tiberius (pronounced in front of the senate and pertained to the attribution of the temple of Tiberius and Livia in the province of Asia); and from the reign of Claudius (Table claudienne). The parallel between the Aeneid and these two discourses helps us to understand how the Augustean ideology evolved in the first years of the Empire. |
