The Mediterranean coastal city of Annaba (Eastern Algeria) faces a strong urban growth for several decades. Limited east by the shoreline and west by the Edough Massif, the only development opportunity for the city and its harbor is the south part of the plain. Nowadays, alluvial plains are increasingly invaded by urban sprawl with negative impacts on natural environment, including wetlands whose ecological integrity is seriously threatened. This is the case of the Fetzara lake, located twenty kilometers south‑west of Annaba. Although included in the Ramsar list (since 2002), it is now surrounded by a new urban project within the Draa Errich locality. The main goal of the present paper is to assess the impact of the urban project on the local hydrosystem, wich includes the wetland and the lake through a multi-criteria analysis. The final results showed their continual ecological degradation and stress the need to implement urgent conservation measures in the framework of a sustainable development strategy for this territory. |
