| الوصف: | Il rapporto tra alcuni protagonisti del Risorgimento e i loro interlocutori statunitensi fu caratterizzato da reciproca simpatia e mutuo interesse, ma non generò necessariamente emulazione o scelte ispirate al sistema americano. Gli Stati Uniti offrivano tuttavia l’opportunità di confrontarsi con un esperimento capace di sopravvivere a enormi difficoltà economiche e politiche e alle tante critiche dei conservatori europei. Molti degli italiani che avevano trovato rifugio in America erano più propensi di altri a vedere nel paese ospitante un’ispirazione alla costruzione di uno Stato-nazione. Giuseppe Mazzini e Carlo Cattaneo, si confrontarono ovviamente con l’esperienza americana giungendo però a conclusioni diverse. Il primo pur riconoscendo il successo del modello americano ne criticava la struttura federale, considerandola un segno della debolezza intrinseca del sistema; l’altro vedeva invece nel federalismo l’unica via per raggiungere una vera e completa libertà. Nessuno dei due comunque considerò quello degli Stati Uniti un modello, viste le troppe differenze geografiche, storiche e politiche tra i due paesi. Le rapport entre certains protagonistes du Risorgimento et leurs interlocuteurs américains fut caractérisé par une sympathie réciproque et un intérêt mutuel, mais il n’entraîna pas nécessairement des effets d’émulation ni des choix inspirés par le modèle américain. Les États-Unis offraient tout de même l’opportunité de se confronter à une expérience capable de survivre à d’énormes difficultés économiques et politiques, ainsi qu’aux nombreuses critiques des conservateurs européens. De nombreux Italiens qui avaient trouvé refuge en Amérique étaient plus enclins que d’autres à voir dans leur pays d’accueil une source d’inspiration pour la construction d’un État-nation. Giuseppe Mazzini et Carlo Cattaneo se confrontèrent à l’expérience américaine, pour arriver cependant à des conclusions opposées. Mazzini, tout en reconnaissant le succès du modèle américain, critiquait sa structure fédérale, qu’il considérait comme un signe de la faiblesse intrinsèque du système ; Cattaneo voyait en revanche dans le fédéralisme la seule voie pour atteindre la vraie et pleine liberté. Aucun des deux toutefois ne considéra véritablement les États-Unis comme un modèle, étant donné les trop grandes différences géographiques, historiques et politiques entre les deux pays. The relationship between some of the Italian Risorgimento leaders and their interlocutors in the United States was informed by mutual interest and sympathy. However, it did not necessarily produce emulators or experiments inspired by the American system. At the same time, the US offered an excellent example of a method of government capable of overcoming political and economic obstacles as well as European criticism. Many of the Italian exiles in America, instead, were more likely to see in the host country a possible model of nation-building. Giuseppe Mazzini and Carlo Cattaneo, of course, dealt with the American experience coming, however, to different conclusions. The former, although acknowledging the success of the American experiment, criticized federalism which proved the inherent weakness of the system; the latter saw federalism as the only way to achieve a complete and veritable freedom. Neither one, however, used the United States as a model given the numerous geographic, historical and political differences between the two countries. |
