This article aims to reread the first novel published by Romain Gary under the pseudonym of Émile Ajar under a zoopoetic light. Gros-Câlin’s writing, which aims to mimic the snake’s convolutions, really transcribe what would be an ophic cognitive style, or is it simply the clumsy justification of a narrator who is both "naive" and "crazy" (Riggan, 1981)? We will show how R. Gary/É. Ajar offers in Gros-Câlin a discourse on the impossible becoming-animal, on the failures of interspecific communication, and on the pathetic and vain search for an impossible humanimal "brotherhood". It will turn out that it is precisely by problematizing the difficulties and the limits of any writing on the animal that the book paradoxically makes possible the zoocentring. |
