| الوصف: | Cet article examine comment From Hell, roman graphique d’Eddie Campbell et Alan Moore, associe les conventions littéraires et le code régissant la bande dessinée, érudition et culture populaire pour produire une œuvre expérimentale qui, en jouant sur ces codes, affecte les régimes de lecture. Tout d’abord, un paratexte verbal et visuel abondant et minutieusement noué au récit par des phénomènes de propagation multiplie les cadres et agit sur la mémoire du lecteur en le ramenant constamment vers la périphérie de l’œuvre. Ensuite, les ellipses narratives et visuelles, éléments inhérents à la grammaire iconique, font l’objet d’expérimentations qui menacent parfois la lisibilité de l’ouvrage. En parallèle, la prolifération de signes et d’indices fragmentaires dans un parcours qui refaçonne le modèle de l’intrigue policière, impose au lecteur un travail de reconstitution et de déchiffrage sans fin. Enfin, le lien structurel entre texte et image est l’occasion pour les auteurs de tester les limites du code pour à la fois orienter et désorienter la lecture. This paper discusses how From Hell, a graphic novel by Eddie Campbell and Alan Moore, combines literary conventions and comics language, classical references and popular culture to create a highly experimental graphic novel which plays on these codes to disrupt modes of reading. Firstly, by carefully weaving an extensive verbal and graphic paratext to the body of the text, From Hell multiplies the layers of framing and acts on the reader’s memory by constantly taking him/her back to the thresholds of the work. Furthermore, the reading process in the novel is often hampered by its exploration of how narrative and visual ellipses may disrupt iconic grammar. Urged to literally fill in the blanks, the reader of this subverted detective story also has to decipher and connect the numerous signs and fragments of meaning proliferating throughout the novel. Finally, the link between text and image provides the opportunity for the authors to put to the test the limits of comics language either to guide or to confuse the reader. |
