| الوصف: | Over the years, the Scottish National Party has clearly emphasised the alienness of England’s ethos (epitomised by Margaret Thatcher), thereby building on the idea that the two nations are divided in ways that go beyond their mere historical, institutional and economic differences. Interestingly, this approach to the relationship between Scotland and England is not altogether different from that defended by some, for example within the ranks of (Scottish) Labour. Testing the notion that Scottish people have a different outlook on politics, the economy and so on, against facts and the like is certainly a most interesting exercise. But if the dichotomy does not quite hold, a close look at the theoretical dimension of the question is probably equally instructive. Le discours tenu par les nationalistes écossais — discours que l’on entend à vrai dire également chez d’autres, dans les rangs du (Scottish) Labour Party par exemple — semble depuis un certain temps maintenant s’appuyer sans retenue sur l’idée que l’Écosse et l’Angleterre sont séparées par autre chose que l’histoire, les institutions ou les intérêts économiques. La coupure la plus fondamentale serait liée aux génies respectifs des deux nations ; ainsi la première serait-elle, entre autres choses, volontiers altruiste tandis que la seconde aurait une assez nette propension à promouvoir des sentiments contraires (dont Margaret Thatcher serait l’incarnation). Tenter d’établir le degré de cohérence de cette conception revient certes pour beaucoup à en éprouver la validité à l’aune des faits. Toutefois, s’il s’avère que l’idée ne tient pas vraiment, l’étude des tenants théoriques d’une telle conception devient au moins aussi instructive. |
