Few anthropologists know that language educators borrow heavily from their field. Attached to linguistics in France, language education (didactique des langues in French) has put into place so-called « intercultural » approaches to prepare language learners to meet the « other ». Since the emergence of the « intercultural » in language education at the end of the 1970s, anthropology has been in a privileged position to orient theoretical as well as methodological approaches in this direction (Roberts et al., 2001: 12). Yet we know very little about these « borrowings ». This article reviews a study conducted in English, which appears to be representative of this phenomenon. It shows how anthropology is taught to language learners and how language educators use it to « evaluate » its influence on the intercultural encounters that the students experience when they go abroad. I ask the following questions: to what kind of anthropology does the study under scrutiny here resort? How is it used? Are « borrowings » fruitful, i.e. do they allow the advancement of intercultural education? |
