From environmental crisis to anxiety-provoking predictions, the apocalyptic discourse has become a fashionable contemporary genre, which is not without analogy to what could have happened in the nineteenth century when the idea of man becoming autonomous vis-à-vis nature was becoming dominant. For the historian of technology who republished, along with Françoise Jarrige, La Fin du monde par la science [The End of the World by Science] by Eugène Huzar, the rediscovery of these forgotten views allows one to especially understand the phenomena which allowed for the eclipse of the whistle-blowers –and to question their contemporary avatars. The theory of reflexive modernity, in particular, when it justifies the creation of a technonature, prolongs and celebrates this separation. And yet, if we have very well entered a post-geological era, the Anthropocene, in which human action transforms the planet on a very long-term scale, reconstituting the ‘environmental grammars’ of the past would help better understand what is at stake in the contemporary environmental crisis, qualified here as the ‘end of the slow motion world’. |
