| الوصف: | Cet article vise à interroger la contribution de la botanique à l’entreprise coloniale britannique à travers la longue carrière de Nathaniel Wallich (1786-1854), le conservateur du jardin botanique de Calcutta, de 1815 à 1846. Alors que la Compagnie britannique des Indes orientales étend son influence sur le sous-continent indien, de nouvelles opportunités s’offrent à elle tant en matière de découvertes scientifiques que de commerce. Les sciences naturelles et tout particulièrement la botanique, sont au cœur de ce processus. De par sa fonction de conservateur du jardin botanique de Calcutta, Wallich trône sur la botanique coloniale indienne. Son parcours exceptionnel soulève de multiples questions : dans quelle mesure les sciences botaniques contribuèrent-elles à la conquête et à l’exploitation des nouveaux territoires de l’Empire des Indes ? Comment parvint-il à concilier son engagement scientifique et les impératifs mercantiles de la Compagnie ? Il s’agira donc d’illustrer ici toute la complexité des rapports entre Empire et botanique. This article explores the contribution of botany to the to the British colonial enterprise in India through the long career of Nathaniel Wallich (1786-1854) as Superintendent of the Calcutta botanical garden from 1815 to 1846. As the East India Company extended its influence over the Indian subcontinent, new opportunities arose both in terms of trade and scientific discovery. Natural sciences and especially botany were centrestage. As Superintendent of the Calcutta botanical, Wallich was the most prominent figure of colonial botany in India. His exceptional career raises a great many questions: to what extent was botanical science put to contribution in the conquest of new territories in the Indian Empire? How was Wallich able to reconcile his scientific commitment and the mercantile interests of the Company? This article seeks to explore the complex relationship of botany and Empire. |
