The article traces the history of the Zeravshan valley, and particularly the Khanate of Bukhara between the sixteenth and early twentieth centuries, with reference to the numerous communities who had moved there, and maps the evolution of their definition of identity. The Indian, Armenian, Jewish, Arab minorities have sometimes a special status, each of them occupying specific territories and having specific activities. The author describes the many-sided conflicts between Turks and Iranians, Shiites and Sunnis, and he shows that the authorities of the Emirate of Bukhara and the Russian Empire played on these antagonisms in order to govern. |
