| الوصف: | Jaroslav Preiss was a leading banker of the first Czechoslovak Republic. Orphaned and poor, he yet became a doctor in law and began his active life as a journalist for the Young Czech Party in 1900. He worked for the Zivnobanka from 1907 on and quickly became assistant manager. From 1917 on he stood as Živnobanka’s general manager until 1938. He supported Czech manufacturers to build national industries. He already had patriotic feelings and during World War One refused to sell Austrian state loans. He was consequently jailed for thirteen months in 1916-1917. He took part in the peace negotiations of 1918-1919 as a financial adviser. In the meantime he had been elected representative but soon resigned to devote himself to business. Though a national leftist, he helped President Masaryk to build and stabilize the Czech democracy. As Živnobanka’s general manager, he was somehow a finance minister behind the scene during the Interwar period. His bank was involved in all the great Czech firms. He retired in 1938 but was persecuted by the Nazis in 1942 and 1945 unjustly put in custody by the Communists. He died two days after his release. Besides being a leading banker, he had also been a real democrat. |
